Steve Clarke on Scottish Refs

Steve Clarke is the one that impresses me more all the time and I didn't really want him at the time either.

I'd think 99 people out of 100 would have Clarke over Gerrard - but only if you were voting..

otherwise it would be 100/100 everytime

Rangers might be lucky, Cosgrove could be out

Cant see him recovering from a back spasm by Wednesday Fan...you never know. though ..

but thus far - tactically, Deek has Stevie in his back pocket.

I think Aberdeen will edge it regardless.

Not an excuse for crap refs.

But the level of cheating by players these days is shocking.

Players at every club do it as a matter of routine.

Back on the day there was much less.

They'd punch an opponent and then take their punishment calmly.

Steve Clarke is bang on the button. A media furore one week and silence the next.
Dallas has had every charge against him rebuffed with a fine or a ban for the complainant. He is the Teflon kid.
Refereeing up here is clandestine at best. Has no connection with the game.

Sorry, good article. Really wish Rodgers would stand up and be counted now. Most managers have/are allowed their say.

I never said I wanted Gerrard over him.

But if you want my reasons for not wanting Clarke at the time, I felt that outside of killie he had one good season with West Brom mixed in with a bad season with them and a sacking at Reading.

Gerrard I said at the time was a gamble. But let's make a hindsight vote and draw conclusions that I would be the only one out of a 100 not to be that keen.

This for me is the biggest part of it, perhaps its a generation thing when players rarely questioned a ref for fear of a rollicking. Also, players when tackled tried to get up and pretend that it didn't hurt, now, well a stray shoelace is enough for a stretcher to be called for..

We have to embrace technology, the TV companies and pundits have it in an instant and can immediately highlight a player being a nano centimeter on or offside and of course the official gets the blame...

A good season at West Brom is fairly exceptional in most eyes.

Don’t disagree but referees have it within their authority to caution players for backchatting and simulation. The amount of abuse they take and decide that no action is necessary astounds me.

You wouldn’t take that from someone in the street let alone on a pitch you’re trying to officiate and command some respect.

I’m not suggesting for a second they deserve it or bring it on themselves but they could and should do something about it.

A few bookings dished out early doors mind and many pundits and fans tend to give it “he’s lost the plot” when in truth he’s trying to set some standards.

Who’d be a referee today ffs. I did it at amateur level having got my Grades and binned it as it was just getting worse and worse.

I don't want to be having a go at him but a two point turnaround isnt exceptional. What he has done with Kilmarnock is exceptional. At West Brom he took over a mid table team for the previous two seasons and had a better mid table finish.

He definitely had more managerial pedigree than Gerrard. And maybe was the strongest candidate. I still had reservations.

Wasn't aware you were comparing, apologies Miller.
Gerrard has had the backing of the media from day one. We can be a very welcoming place.

Good old days can be where you are when everything else moves ahead.

Steve Conroy, the former ref, adding fuel to the flames.

‘Conroy, a Celtic supporter, is open about his club allegiances but is "utterly convinced" that who a referee supports has no impact on their performances.

And, when asked if he knew of any other Celtic fans among officials, he replied: "I can't think of any."

"I don't like conspiracy theories, it's an awful easy excuse to explain things away," he added.

"There was never any discussion on who you support and who you don't. I certainly never minded telling people who I support. It's out there so no-one can say anything after it."

<Well I disagree. It wasn’t the good old days.>

Nobody said it was.

The strand of conversation was about players cheating.

There was less of it then.

That's all.

Refs today have higher levels of cheating plus more intense scrutiny.

Of course.

Savage & illegal.

Glad to see there's less of that now.

But they didn't try to pretend the guy hit him in the fist with his face.

Cheatin bastirts today would.
