If you weren't around to see Maradona, Ali etc it's not really possibly to give a valid judgement, so I'll just give my opinion on those I've actually seen.

Football - Messi
Tennis - Federer
Cricket - Tendulker (Warne probably my favourite)
Athletics - Does Phelps count, or does it need to be track and field?

football-messi
tennis -federer
cricket-dont watch
athletics- if all olympians then phelps hands down, but theres so many of less popular sports. Bolt is 13th of all time in terms of golds, and about 60th in terms of medal haul.

Too many variants of the same event (swimming) for me, makes the medal haul less impressive, unless they start doing 100m running backwards, sidestep and regular sprinting as 3 separate events as well.

tbf mike they do have relays and 200m and hurdles...

I think swimming just shows great skill as the strokes are so different. Very rarely do you get someone top at each stroke...

Yeah different distances I get, same as running, rowing, cycling etc.

Utter filth

Just think a good swimmer/rower can compete in so many events when comparing to the likes of Bolt so going by just medals is harsh.

Swimming also has different lengths and relays.

Phelps easily the best Olympian ever.

Athletics was the question though, well lots of variables there and almost impossible to choose a 'goat'.

Football - Messi.

Tennis - Only game I’ve watched was Borg v Shia Labeouf and I would have to go Labeouf based on that.

Cricket - No idea.

Athletics - Phelps or Bolt.

Djokovic?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes. A player that was able to compete with and beat a prime Federer and will no doubt go on to beat his slams record.

you have to consider the fact Nadal has one 13 of 19 at the french open where he is completely dominant.

Djokovic also leads 28-26 in head to heads and has held world number 1 for longer.
