We have players at the club that are more capable of playing as defensive midfielders than Lingard and Pereira are at playing as attacking midfielders.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
capable and being good enough are 2 different things
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree. For all the stick Maguire and Lindelof ahve had, Fred does a really poor job of following runners and positioning himself in good defensive positions.

I know he's improved, but Fred is a prime example of a player who gives his all, but has the footballing brain of a primate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
i think fred has improved massively... but he isnt a DM.

he is the guy that will run and put pressure on players trying to win the ball back.. and to be fair he does that quite often.

But that’s irrelevant because Lingard and Pereira clearly aren’t good enough either.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The reality is only about 25% of our squad is good enough, or potentially good enough.

Unfortunately for him, McTominay does that better imo. Wouldn't mind the to sharing the role if we could sign a Carrick type player.

But again, that’s not really the debate. The argument is that Ole doesn’t have the players to play 433. When it’s actually the best fit for our team.

Possibly, but how often have our fans second guessed the manager, and when the lineup/ formation is as we wish it's failed.

Kagawa at No10, Mata at No10, attacking line ups under Jose etc

Fernandes wouldn't have to be pushed up along side Martial in a back 3 formation surely?

----------------------- DDG ---------------------

---Bailly/Jones --- Maguire ------ Lindelof

--------------------- Matic/McT -----------------

AWB/Dalot --- Fernandes ----- Fred ------ Williams/Shaw

-------- Greenwood/James ----- Martial -----------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree Mike. As much as that formation sounds negative on paper, it can be utilised as 4-3-3 with the attacking side up and the other wingback back, or balls-out attack with both wingbacks attacking. Offers a lot of versatility 4-2-3-1 doesn't. It also suits our squad.

To the OP. The Bruno signing is a good signing but for me the real impact will be next season. The whole settling in and what he has around him etc being the reasons

Of course he may hit the ground running and that would be great . But it would be a bonus rather than expectation for the rest of this season.

That's not a negative or reflection on the signing, simply reality of a player moving to the prem. Takes a bit of time to adjust.

Fear for me is people seeing him as a saviour and getting in his case when that doesn't happen from his first game for us

Difference is our results tend to be better when we’ve played 433. So that argument doesn’t wash.

Bruno Fernandes then. What do we reckon?

Here are his debut numbers.

78% Pass accuracy (69/88)
5/11 Accurate long passes
0/3 Accurate crosses
3/5 Shots on target
5/12 Ground duels won
2/5 Tackles won
26 Losses of possession

The above is not a dig. I believe he's a good player and will come good.

If I could find my comment from a few days ago about taking bets on who’s gonna be the first to post his ‘lost possession’ stats
