van der sar was quality especially for his age and at that time the best with his feet.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He wasn't the best with his feet at all. Reina was better than him with his feet, for example.

he too was good with his feet in fairness.

I would have him in the top 10 prem GK list.

If Reina didn't have those bad couple of seasons when his head wasn't right when he didn't get the move to Arsenal after players started leaving, due to the Hicks and Gillet situation, hed be higher in the list for me. He was outstanding up to that point, especially with his feet and his distribution.

As a United fan I would of course say VDS was a great keeper for us. But to be fair to a couple of other names in that list, I wouldn't have placed him as high as third.

VDS was quality for Fulham.

Reina is a bad omission from the list as well. As incredible as Allison is, i feel it a bit convoluted including him considering he has only completed one full season. He will undoubtedly make the list in five years time though.

If Alisson had completed five years on the level he has been, I'd have him perhaps top. Not only is he a great shot stopper and great one on one, he's excellent with his feet also. This is the advantage modern goalkeepers have over past goalkeepers but as you say, he needs to do it over a longer period, when you're talking best of all time in the PL.

Cech is number one for me as well. I feel his level is far above what Schmeichals was, PS was in the era where you could get away with mistakes a lot more easily.

Alisson doesn't have the longevity yet.

Cech should always be number 1 if people are not nostalgic.

cudicini and reina > given as well. similar stature but both played at a higher level

I think Schmeichel was the best I have ever seen one on one. United had a bit of a gung ho approach at times in the 90s leaving him open to a one on one situation. It was amazing how difficult he mate it for attackers. He was also an outstanding shot stopping and great in the air also, strong and a big leader on the pitch, with organising his defence. I'd have him above Cech.

Better stats, broke ever single record, more clean sheets, better shot stopper, calm, composed.
PS was a big character and leader, and was good at making himself big, obviously a top keeper but i think nostalgia makes people put him number 1 rather than actually looking into talent, skills, records etc

How do you define ‘greatest’

How many games they played
How many saves the made
How many penalties they saved
How many clean sheets they had
How many trophies they won

You have to take into consideration so many different factors before answering such a simple question

For me, longevity, presence, character and major honours won define who is the greatest PL keeper - and it has to be Schmeichal

Don’t think there is anyone who can match what he achieved in the game

Things like this were not rare for schmiechel

well that would be you. For me matt le tissier is a pl great and he won nothing. Shearer the same, 1 league title.
Talent, skillset, ability, as well as achievements, should come into it for most.

It’s a tough thing to compare. As leadership qualities and all that where much more of an important factor in the 90s. Cech just consistently never made mistakes for the best part of like 5 years which was absurd. DDG has made saves that I’ve seen no other team do and then Ederson/Allison are more creative than half the playmakers in PL history.

I would concede DDG is the best shot stopper i think i've ever seen. Cech just behind.

Agree with you on Cech, slightly disagree on Given. Whilst I thought Cudicini was good, he was never really great. Emphasised by Mourinho’s ease of replacing him pretty straight away with Cech.

Cech
Schmeichel
VDS
Seaman
De Gea
Flowers
Reina
Martyn
Given
Freidel/Schwartz

toby I thought at the time we had the best two keepers in the league in cech and cudicini. But fair enough.

Cudicini has lost all credibility to make any list based on him sitting most his career out

I was chuffed we got him don’t get me wrong. Best No.2 in the league.

In terms of Reflexes Lloris is up there with the best - but too many areas of his game let him down. Distribution being the main one.

Allison/Ederson haven’t done it for long enough. Actually could be argued Ederson was shown up a few times during the season with City’s ever changing back line.

Both allison and ederson made a few mistakes last year, but both are well ahead of cech in terms of ball playing ability, and cech was better than schmeichel at that. So if allison and ederson show high levels over a 5 year period they could take the crown
