How long can football last without

I don't see any reason why crowds can't begin returning in September, based on the current trajectory.

There are so many unknowns, so many variables, that it's really difficult to say.

If they open up pubs again in July/August, why can't they open up stadiums?

Pubs to a certain extent can put distance between paying customers. If in a football stadium, you say put a spectator in every third seat, they would still have to pass fans to get to their seat. Also gangways get crowded, especially at the end of a game, when everybody tries to leave together. Bars get crowded, etc. Fans have to get to games on crowded trains, buses.

Cannot see anyway it could be safely done until it is finally absolutely 100 per cent safe, and back to normal.

All clubs can last without fans. They will just need to act prudently and adjust their outgoings accordingly like any business affected by the pandemic.

I do understand this is difficult for most owners of football clubs, as they all seem to want to live beyond their means.

What about league one/two teams, how are they expected to exist without money coming through the turnstiles?

What about players on pay per play contracts?

Usually owners of lower league clubs are local businessmen who don't have bottomless pits of money and are actually living well within their means, or at least we're when they had fans attending games.

I’m surprised there isn’t more talk about how letting fans in the stadium just not to full capacity. I guess it is something to think about more down the line. You could quite reasonably fill a stadium to 1/4 or a 1/3 capacity at least and still have more than the supposedly magic 2 metres between fans of different households.

Cons? I think it would be hard to regulate fans who are sat high up in large stadiums just congregating near the pitch especially in the vocal stands. And not sure if it would even be financially possible for small stadiums to let in such a small gate number (and also hire staff needed to accommodate). But biggest issue would be that, in largest stadiums having 15k people travel to the match would take up a lot of public transport.

I think football can last much longer without the fans going to the stadium than the fans can last without football.

One step at a time. First get the games going and then allow a small percentage of fans with social distancing with a gradual increase but not expecting even 50% full until spring 2021.

The PL will survive without fans due to the TV money, possible even the Championship.

Lower than that is a problem, cant see how many will survive at all without handouts from the Gov/PL/FA.

No point in saying they will get increased TV money, if the majority of the top 2 leagues are broadcast live because there are no fans, who is going to watch a League 2 game? It will be Football overkill.

I’ve been offered credit for the remaining home games this season or I can get refunded

The credit can be used to reduce the price of next season’s season ticket

They won’t be sorting next season’s tickets until things improve

I have been offered all the money back on my tickets I purchased for four of the last five home games, and they said it should be back within my account in the next two or three weeks.

As you say Hounslow, they cannot really sort out the season tickets until they know for sure what is happening. This is going to be one big clusterfeck. Although I suspect there will be no supporters back next season either.

If the stadiums are going to be empty or partly empty for a portion of next season then I'd imagine the lower league clubs would be looking to get cameras in and charge ppv for their games.

It won't replace gate receipts and all the associated sales benefits but it would in some way monetise their games. So if a team normally gets a 5k gate and can only let in 1k people, theoretically you've got another 4k people who want to watch the game and might be prepared to pay for coverage. Maybe even more if the away fans can buy the game but wouldn't necessarily travel to an away game.

Lower league teams are certainly going to have to be inventive to stay afloat.

I would have thought it would have been far to expensive to set up ppv for lower league clubs that barely get three or four thousand through the gates.

Erm actually no mate. Football is a business. I own multiple businesses. So I kind of know what is happening in terms of re-adjusting to the present climate.

Businesses that live hand to mouth and have one main revenue stream and operate with wages as a % of sales north of 60% are quite simply asking for trouble at the best of times. Let alone during a global pandemic. To be perfectly honest in normal businesses anything north of 30% w%sales would be mismanagement for me but hey ho.

I’m not saying it won’t be exceptionally difficult for a lot of clubs (especially lower than the top flight) as they have been mismanaged financially for decades. But some clubs (Shrewsbury a good example) are managed in a financially astute manner and as a consequence can adjust their outgoings / players contracts accordingly, which ultimately will happen accross the market place too (otherwise clubs will indeed go to the wall).

The clubs who have been operating in a financially reckless manner will suffer yes, but re-calibrations will be made and business will continue, just as every single other businesses in the economy has to do as well.

Why? Just need cameras at the game, a website to stream to game and a payment mechanism.

It might not be worth it as a one off but if the ground is going to be empty for half the season then it should be ok. It’s not the 90s, doing this type of thing isn’t overly complicated or overly expensive.
