Are you a Monarchist or Republican?

I loathe all forms of privilege so I’d happily sell the entire royal family to the highest bidder (maybe not the best term in this current climate granted)

I'd vote to keep the monarchy in place, but I wouldn't go to war over it.

I think the idea of a monarchy is utterly absurd, but I don't care enough to have strong feelings that they should be removed.

Probably because I think William is a fantastic character.

But the idea that people are born into a position of greater importance than anyone else facks me off a bit.

Comments like this are always a bit daft. I completely understand the antipathy towards the concept of monarchy, and of individuals being raised about the rest by virtue of birth and nothing else (but let's face it, that's relevant throughout all social classes). However, has the existence of the royal family ever actually impacted you enough that it warrants calling them parasites? The core royals have done amazing work for charities throughout the world.

The thing is, they're billionaire's without state funding, so I don't for a moment opposed defunding the monarchy - they don't need the money.

Good points.

As someone who does not live with a monarchy its difficult to understand.

I dont really have any time for royalty myself but William and Kate do seem like decent people (He certainly has a lot of his mother in him).

Who knows they could be the ones to pull the monarchy kicking and screaming into the 21st century?

Most people are indifferent to them to be honest.

The hate the English and everything they stand for generation (my parents on were probably the last) are all but gone and most folk I know have no problem with them.

Still want to beat them at sport though

I think the huge run on Irish passports by British people who hated the leave vote can on the strengthen the bond 😂

You can't call William a parasite.

But the problem is, for all the good that characters such as him bring to the country, people like Prince Andrew will continue to exist.

It makes me uneasy about the whole set up.

I want have an Independent republic of Wales ideally.

The monarchy are a bit like the statues recently in the news though. Removing them wouldn't take away the history (so the UK would still get tourists).

I just don't see in these modern times how we can have people in positions just because of an accident of birth. A royal isn't more or less important than any other person.

More tourists travel to see that giant pylon in Paris than come to Britain for the royals.

Down with the monarchy. And even more importantly, down with the whole concept of the peerage and all the land they hoard.

With the current neo-Marxist movement toppling statues, it's only a matter of time before they target the 'hierarchy' and 'white privilege' of the monarchy.

I don't like the concept of monarchy, so couldn't care less. Although, the cultural war in this country is heating up.

If you put it to a vote, I strongly believe that to keep them would win by a large majority.

It'd be quite strange having a vote for something that by its very nature is pretty undemocratic!

We used to vote for our Kings once upon a time.

Then Billy the Conqueror sailed over and ruined everything.

There was a vote in Australia in the late 90s to become a republic. It was very close - to remain a Monarchy won with 54%. It was thought the older generation of British ex pats helped win the vote.

If there was a vote in the Uk now I’m sure the Monarchy would be the winners. But given a couple more decades I’m not so sure they would.

I think a vote on it would closely mirror the Brexit vote.
