Wasn't it Mourinho who didn't play him enough, so he decided to leave?
Herrera played well last night, one of the best players on the pitch in the first half.
I liked Herrera and felt he got a bit of a raw deal by LVG and Jose at times, but him and Fred are not to dissimilar in terms of ability
Any evidence that this was true? From my recollection, Fred had nothing to do with this. Jose benched Herrera and the damage was done.

I agree. One has a footballing brain though.
I assume Herrera would have required a very big new contract to stay, in addition to a sense that the club had acted early enough to assure him that he was wanted.
I was disappointed that Herrera left. I liked his attitude and commitment and I thought it left us pretty exposed in midfield letting him go without buying a replacement. But in the event, I think the improvements in McTominay and Fred this year meant we didn't really miss him except in terms of squad depth.

Seems quite a few have already forgot how good that combo was for quite a big chunk of the season.
Fred has been one of our best players this season.
Worth noting that herrera has been injured quite a lot this season - and managed all of 8 appearances in ligue 1 - which would make his wages even more extravagant.
Herrera wasn't offered a new deal when he went into the last year of his contract, he was also benched and out of favour with Jose.
Ole then came in and wanted to keep him, but he'd already been offered a far better deal with PSG. I don't really begrudge him leaving to be honest. If we'd offered him a deal beforehand I think he would have stayed. Blame Ed and Jose for him leaving, no one else.
That being said Fred has been very good this season and both players are very similar anyway with their overall footballing level.

Rubbish. Herrera was overrated for us. There’s a reason he was never really considered a regular.
There's a reason PSG wanted Herrera. More of a leader and more comfortable on the ball than Fred. That pass to Di Maria, Fred doesn't see that, or over/under hits it.

Sure you rate Rashford, Lingard and lindelof
Herrera is comfortably better than Fred. His positional play in terms of plugging gaps in midfield is superior, and his passing is much, much better.
I think in Spain he was second to only Fabregas for successful through-balls or something like that. He's always had a nice weight of pass in the final third. We saw some of our best play under LvG with the link up play between Herrera, Mata and Valencia.
I'd certainly agree that Herrera was the better player. I am not sure that I would blame and Judge for his departure though. Jose didn't fancy him. For whatever reason he decided to replace our best performing player with Matic. Probably due to the fact that he is taller. No offence to Matic, who has done ok this season, but it was a totally pointless signing. By the time Ole came in the damage was done and Herrera had already agreed to join PSG.
As I said above, I was sorry to lose Herrera. I liked him as a player, and even more I liked having his mentality in the team. I think Fred has some way to go before we see him as an asset of equal worth. It felt like a risk letting him go without investing in the midfield last season, and I think we particularly felt the cost of that when injuries meant relying on Pereira and Lingard in the starting XI. That said, our fundamental shortcoming in midfield this season was in the number 10 position, as underlined by the transformation Fernandes made to the team. The McTominay-Fred partnership was a relative bright spot in the first half of the season.
Herrera is a more versatile footballer than Fred, and he's much more capable of seeing and executing those eye-of-the-needle passes, as Martial Law points out. I think Fred has the capacity to be better than Herrera at pressing and dispossessing though, which is a more important role in the team if we're playing him behind a 10. I did a random Google search for Fred stats and came across the following on Planet Football (lacking both context and source attribution, so caveats apply):
– made 140 passes into the final third for United this season, more than any other player.
– created more chances than any of his team-mates with 68. His 60 chances created from open play is also the highest figure at United.
– has won possession of the ball 221 times this season, more than any other midfielder in the top six.
– Wan-Bissaka is the only United player to make more successful tackles per 90 minutes than Fred this season.
– His 337 passes when under pressure also lead the way at the club.
– has made 188 successful pressures, more than any other United player this season.
...These stats don't tell us anything in absolute terms but they also support the view that he brings along certain tangible assets as well as limitations. Given the fact that he has also improved markedly this season, I'd be inclined to cut him a little slack rather than double down on the hate.

Nah.
Fred is the genuine article.
Herrera was a clueless dog in a tail chasing competition. Sure he did pretty well in a lesser league system, but he just couldn't adapt to the EPL.
The great shame was he held the club back for so long - possibly because he hid under the radar whilst the club got through so many managers.
Got rid of him far too late.
His greatest contribution was in getting Gerrard sent off.
Fred, in contrast, has taken the obligatory season to adapt, but at least he has got there. Because he has so much more to his game than just cluelessly running around like Herrera did.
He has become one of United's more easily selectable players.
