There are no absolute facts, that is your error here.
If you truly believe that we couldn’t have signed a different player at a similar ability to Maguire for less money then you’re entitled to believe that.
And everyone else is entitled to their view.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly. Without all of the facts you cant really say how poor a deal the Maguire fee was.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are no facts.
There’s no entirely informed opinion.
What it would have cost to buy a player of similar ability elsewhere is entirely a matter of opinion.
We can look at other players, other transfers and other clubs to build our opinion.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No. Woodward would have known what other CB's were available, who would be interested in signing and at what cost.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You don't know that.

Reasonable is relative mate.
Were there alternatives available? How much would yhey cost? How much did Leicester demand?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ake
Dias
Milenkovic
Upamecano
Konate
Alderweireld
Skriniar
All options that were talked about in the press. I think Alderweirald at £25m would have been better value. And Ake at £40m.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
OK
How many of them wanted to move to United?
Of those how many fitted the profile Ole wanted?
Of those, who was available for transfer?
At what cost?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh bore off. You are making out like Maguire is the only CB we could have bought to make the team better for £80 or less. Its laughable. We overpaid for Maguire by some way. I dont know anyone who things differently. Squirm and wriggle and move the goalposts all you like. That was not a reasonable transfer fee.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think this proves my point.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It doesn't.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You dont know all the facts in order to judge Eds decision to pay what he did for Maguire.

Either way, you're wrong.

It's not that odd. I don't watch much football outside if the PL these days. That doesn't alter the fact that Maguire isn't an £80m player. The best defender in the world went for £75. Maguire is some way off his level. It's really that simple. Ed had his pants pulled down as usual
Age
Physical attributes
Personality / attitude / mentality
Availability
Wage demands
Interest in mood
Alternative options
Public profile
Longevity (willingness to stay)
These just some of the things that clubs take into account in addition to ability when targeting a player.
It's easy for us to sit here and say VVD is better, Ake is as good, blah blah blah, but we dont know everything that is considered when signing a player, which is why I find the attitude of our fans towards deals done quite ignorant.

Businesses going bust like it’s going out of fashion, hundreds of thousands of people losing their livelihoods
We are living in unprecedented times
Yet there are people on this site having daily f4nny fits because United aren’t spending tens of millions on new players
Not so much this article but there are plenty of them
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Moot comment really.
Hasn't stopped Chelsea spending 200 million.
They were arguably already on level ability to our team.... Not anymore. We will fall behind the pack with the current squad we have.

I think the transfer can has skewed their spending. They had money in the bank.

Age
Physical attributes
Personality / attitude / mentality
Availability
Wage demands
Interest in mood
Alternative options
Public profile
Longevity (willingness to stay)
These just some of the things that clubs take into account in addition to ability when targeting a player.
It's easy for us to sit here and say VVD is better, Ake is as good, blah blah blah, but we dont know everything that is considered when signing a player, which is why I find the attitude of our fans towards deals done quite ignorant.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fair points RDD.
There can't be many extremely slow, uncharismatic CB's about with the ability to get banged up abroad going for less then £80m and who are willing to accept £190k a week.

Their transfer ban was nonexistent. They signed Pulisic 5 months early and were also allowed to make the Kovacic move permanent in last summer's window. Those deals combined cost £100 million

There are no absolute facts, that is your error here.
If you truly believe that we couldn’t have signed a different player at a similar ability to Maguire for less money then you’re entitled to believe that.
And everyone else is entitled to their view.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly. Without all of the facts you cant really say how poor a deal the Maguire fee was.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are no facts.
There’s no entirely informed opinion.
What it would have cost to buy a player of similar ability elsewhere is entirely a matter of opinion.
We can look at other players, other transfers and other clubs to build our opinion.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No. Woodward would have known what other CB's were available, who would be interested in signing and at what cost.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You don't know that.

Reasonable is relative mate.
Were there alternatives available? How much would yhey cost? How much did Leicester demand?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ake
Dias
Milenkovic
Upamecano
Konate
Alderweireld
Skriniar
All options that were talked about in the press. I think Alderweirald at £25m would have been better value. And Ake at £40m.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
OK
How many of them wanted to move to United?
Of those how many fitted the profile Ole wanted?
Of those, who was available for transfer?
At what cost?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh bore off. You are making out like Maguire is the only CB we could have bought to make the team better for £80 or less. Its laughable. We overpaid for Maguire by some way. I dont know anyone who things differently. Squirm and wriggle and move the goalposts all you like. That was not a reasonable transfer fee.

Reasonable is relative mate.
Were there alternatives available? How much would yhey cost? How much did Leicester demand?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ake
Dias
Milenkovic
Upamecano
Konate
Alderweireld
Skriniar
All options that were talked about in the press. I think Alderweirald at £25m would have been better value. And Ake at £40m.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
OK
How many of them wanted to move to United?
Of those how many fitted the profile Ole wanted?
Of those, who was available for transfer?
At what cost?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh bore off. You are making out like Maguire is the only CB we could have bought to make the team better for £80 or less. Its laughable. We overpaid for Maguire by some way. I dont know anyone who things differently. Squirm and wriggle and move the goalposts all you like. That was not a reasonable transfer fee.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think this proves my point.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It doesn't.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It does.
You dont know all the facts in order to judge Eds decision to pay what he did for Maguire.
When this it pointed out you lose your temper
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lose my temper?
The only fact I need to know is that we paid £80m for Maguire and he isn't an £80m player. We paid Rio prices for a Carra quality CB. Terrible business.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Terrible business when compared with what?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Paying £75m for the best CB in the world who is 2 tiers better. Paying £40m for Ake who is just as good as Maguire. Paying £25m for Alderweirald who is better. And probably 20 other deals that better negotiators would have been able to make happen for a decent price.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
VVD il give you, although did the manager at the time he was at Saints ask for him?
Ake - We dont know what he would have cost pre lockdown or if he fitted Oles profile.
The other PROBABLE deals you THINK COULD have happened dont require a response.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you think that there wasn't a suitable CB that could be signed for less than £80m then you are living in cloud cuckoo land.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not saying there wasn't. I'm asking you to name them. You cant, which is quite odd considering how easy you find it to say how bad a deal Maguire was.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not that odd.
