I’d be careful calling him that, it’s only one letter off RDD.

Romano reporting that it’s (still) EUR120M-or-fack-off for Sancho.

If the club ends up spending the asking price on deadline day or failing to sign Ole an alternative who can play from the right, it’ll be yet another massive balls-up.

We should have shelled out in July or walked away and focussed on other targets and priorities.

Like everyone else, I'm wondering what's going on:

- Brinksmanship that works out in the end
- Brinksmanship that fails but we move on swiftly to contingency plan that was finalised in advance (a Brooks / Milik / Perisic level of investment), therefore giving us good reason to try
- Brinksmanship that fails and proves to be catastrophically ill-guided
- Not brinksmanship, but a reflection of the challenges of the transfer market where we need to ship players before we can invest, and the Sancho deal can't be done until everything else is done, and it might or might not work out but don't you people realise how fiendishly complex this whole thing is in the middle of a pandemic and burdened by the legacy of past mistakes!

Moreover, I'm not sure I'm comfortable addressing a forum member I respect by one of my favourite cup sizes. I find that it... confuses me.

The MEN were reporting that we may be holding off bidding until October because of the timings of our financial reporting.

"United will complete their fiscal first quarter on September 30 2020 and any transfer activity before that date would be reflected in the financial reporting and accounts dated September 30, which would then be reported to investors in mid-November.

There is an incentive for United to delay any bid for Sancho until after September 30, which would mean the transfer would only be reflected in the fiscal second quarter accounts ending December 31 2020. As a public company, there is logic in United delaying a bid until between October 1-5, given the benefit of reporting such a material transaction in the quarter ending December 31, rather than in the current quarter that will detail severe losses."

I still hope we do pay the asking price for Sancho (if it's something we can genuinly afford with everything that's happened) although we'd have every right to slag off Ed for being useless.

If the club really feel that the asking price is too much then they should have finished negotiations long ago and worked on alternatives and had them concluded weeks ago.

I can totally see big man Ed trying to haggle and then agreeing to pay the asking price on the last day. Or we'll get £1 off and be told it was worth haggling over.

I’m sure I read that it was the fourth quarterly report that was to be discussed with shareholders today. There’s been a hold up due to covid and they’ve not been published yet. That could be causing the hold up with going big on Sancho.

just had a quick look and they do indeed seem to have a June YE, last issued report was the Q3, so the one due will be the Q4/FY one.

I'd love to see what is going on behind the scenes. Ole made some positive comments regarding transfers early in the window, now he seems to be backtracking.

The same happened last summer talking about bringing in a midfielder.

Don, yep I checked the website as well. I vaguely remember it being said there would be delays on the accounts due to covid. I’m not sure exactly how this all works, however, considering we should already be in a different financial year on our accounts now.

i haven't read these stories, but the idea of delaying the sancho transfer would have made a lot more sense if the intention was to shift it into a different fiscal year, than it would if the intention was simply to shift it into a different quarter of the same fiscal year.

ie not sure why it would make much difference whether he was signed in Q1 (today), or Q2 (thursday), of the 20/21 year.

I’d seen a few things mentioned about it. One was that the delay meant that United actually want to alter the dates of the fiscal year to keep in with the season ending (I don’t know if this is allowed). And another was that they want the board and shareholder conference (that is apparently today) before they commit to any big purchases. But I’m not really sure how much of this is even close to accurate.

ah, ok, that makes sense. companies are allowed to change their year-ends, and whilst i would have thought you'd actually want to make a major purchase before your conference call - because that is good news, no? - if they prefer not to talk about it i can see why they would wait.

cool, so sancho/telles/upamecano done later this week then, that should boost the club.

I know companies can change their year ends, but I don’t know if this is allowed in football given the ffp regulations.

Not sure how clubs are navigating these things given the delay to the season. Prize money that was awarded at the end of the season will obviously impact many club accounts.

We’ll just have to wait until 5th October to find out how Woodward facked up the transfer window.
