Surely that would be a back three of AWB, Lindelof and Shaw with Williams and Telles as wing backs.

If so this isn’t a back five and I really wish people would stop calling it that.

-----------------------------------------------

Given they'll probably be pushed back and defending more often than not it'll be more of a back five than three.

Back threes become fives throughout a game and vice-versa depending on the phase of play.

TRS

It isn’t a back five though is it. No is the answer.

Unless your wing backs are playing as full backs and not wing backs. And ours don’t play as full backs.

I don't see much problem with calling it a back three or five tbh.

It's six of one.

Fortunately PSG have a few injury issues of their own. Though Mbappe and Neymar will still be available.

Why are they out?

Fernandes will captain the team.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Injury I assume for the most. Cavani probably not ready.

Greenwood is a strange one. Was pictured training today and Ole says he has a niggle.

Some reckon we aren’t getting the full story.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Have to say I was thinking some kind of disciplinary incident.

........

Considering they are two completely different set ups you should.

We will have to agree to disagree on this.

Di Maria too.

Yeah forgot about Di Maria. He was suspended.

I don't really see how they're completely different.

Whether you call them full-backs or wing-backs they're still going to be tasked with defending and going forward, wing-backs more so but I don't see how that makes a great deal of difference.

.....

One has three at the back the other has five.

This isn’t rocket science.

Apart from on paper formations aren't so rigid. They change a lot throughout a game.

It's just you being pedantic again VC.

No it isn’t. We all know formations change during the game.

But there is a difference playing with a back five and a back three.

I really hope it's just a niggle. The England shenanigans story was followed by one about him dabbling in nitrous oxide. This is one player we desperately want to have the mentality to back up his ability.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly. The only one you feel can stop him being great is himself.

Nothing to suggest he is anything like Ravel Morrison but you’d hate to see another top talent wasted.

Again I don’t think Greenwood is a bad lad but there is a few hints that he’s not staying completely grounded.

This

In defensive mode the whole team should be collectively defending, when attacking it should be attacking collectively.

When people refer to a back 5 the connotation is one of defence, it has a negative reputation. When played well it can be offensive with one of the 3 CBs attacking too!

I doubt Ole will play any system other than his trusted 4-2-3-1 anyway, so this argument is very academic!

posted on 19/10/20

As TRS clearly states, PSG will most likely take the game to us so however we hope to use our full/wingbacks, they will have to sit deep meaning if we play 3 CBs it will look far more like a back 5 than a back 3. Also just because a line up has wingbacks rather than full backs doesn’t always mean that they will be more offensive (and visa versa), it all depends the team setup. Robertson and TAA on paper are fullbacks on paper but are more offensive than many wingbacks.

VC being a stupid pendant as usual.

This is why I don’t like us using this set up. We spend more time defending with a back line of five than a line of three when we use it.

In a back three you are playing with three at the back. In a back five you play with five at the back. With a back four, well hopefully you get it now you dummy.

Simple maths really. The clue is in the word ‘back’.

I give it out. I have no problem taking it back. Getting abuse from a cretin like 1982 is amusing really.

And when your ‘wingbacks’ are having to sit deep all game because your opponents are offensively strong then you have 2 more players at the back rather than just 3.

3+2=5
