If we try to define comparable. This shouldn’t be too difficult.

We are a G8 country. Let us consider up to G20 for more options.
Our Population is approx 65M so any G20 country <100M I think could be considered proportionate.
Looking for a Demographic similar to ours is more difficult to define and compare. But in simple terms : Birth rate 11 per 1000 Death rate 9.3 per 1000 so look for something close to this.
UK GDP 2.855 trillion USD in 2018.
And an island nation rather than a land locked.
Trading with the whole world but with strong ties to EU trade [at present].
Levels of immigration vs emigration broadly stable since 2016.

The G20 is made up of 19 countries and the EU. The 19 countries are Argentina 44.9M C, Australia 25.6M C, Brazil 210M U, Canada 37.8M C, China 1400M U, Germany 83.2M C, France 67M C, India 1312M U, Indonesia 266M U, Italy 60.4M C, Japan 126M U, Mexico 127M U, the Russian Federation 147M U, Saudi Arabia 34.2M C, South Africa 58.8M C, South Korea 51.7M C, Turkey 83.1M C, the UK 66.6M and the US 329M U.

Based only on Population stats, Which of these G20 nations do you think are comparable? And which are incomparable? And do you think the UK is coping better than any of these countries in the face of the pandemic?
I think the UK should be comparable based on its size and economy to these countries:
1. South Korea [25k cases, 450 deaths]
2. Australia [27k cases, 905 deaths],
3. Saudi Arabia [343k cases, 5,217 deaths]
4. Turkey [351k cases, 9445 deaths]
5. Canada [204k cases, 9,794 deaths]
6. Germany, [386k cases, 9,882 deaths]
7. South Africa, [706k cases, 18,656 deaths]
8. France, [931k cases, 33,885 deaths]
9. Italy [434k cases, 36,705 deaths]
10. United Kingdom [763k cases, 43,967 deaths]

I’ve ranked the list based on total recorded deaths and included cases data for comparison. According to this list the UK is the worst performing G20 country worldwide which is galling when you consider we sit within the G8. But then several G8 nations are sitting near the bottom of this list. We are only slightly worse than Italy and France in this list. France, Italy and the UK's figures far eclipse all others on this list and should mark as a warning for every other country taking restriction warnings lightly.
Questions must be asked about the accuracy of this data, particularly in Asia where stats look very lean.

Weren’t the EU going to tell us to totally fwck off and we’d have to go cap in hand on our knees begging for a deal?

I forget these days taking into account others recollections of how this would all pan out.

I think I’ve consistently maintained a position of “pragmatism will prevail”.

As ever etc etc

Noisy crowd in at the salzburg game - all shoehorned into the centre with the rest of the stadium empty.
