If you get relegated, what are the chances that your coefficient stays high enough to qualify again? If you get relegated to League 2 after 3 years, are you still in Europe? Unlikely.
With the Super League, regardless of how sheite you are. You're there, getting paid 300m. You could field a team of Phil Jones, finish rock bottom, zero points.
You know what happens in that scenario?
You get paid 300m.
Coefficient is only meaningful if you can stay remotely successful in Europe. I agree, it isn't great, and honestly probably shouldn't be used for more than seeding. This isn't a brilliant alternative, and I don't know why it had to change (money aside) - it is however, infinitely better than the proposed alternative, for everyone.

Breaking news will have only been able to report that he'd resigned I'd imagine, not like you can do much fact gathering in an attempt to be the one with the exclusive.
Once you get more information, you update the story to resigning at the end of the year.
Honestly we only have his word to go on that he was going to leave EOY anyway. At least, I haven't heard anyone else say it
