It's 'marque' isn't it? As in a prestige car or something.

Well at least we know there is truth in the rumour we are back in for him if the BBC are reporting it. And it's good that we have acted early. It'd be good if we could get it over the line before England play on Sunday.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
BBC, Bild, Fabrizio Romano and the first to break something was happening today Jan Aage Fjortoft all reported on it. All good sources.

Romano reported we have agreed a 5 year deal with Sancho.

I think we agreed a deal with Sancho last summer. Just couldn't get the deal over the line.

True. I enjoy the clueless journalists like Miguel Delaney trying to get involved. I think his report today after all the above was “there’s a feeling that Sancho to United is likely”. What a plonker.

I think its nailed on. I genuinely think he really wants to join us. Which is why there is no real noise about other clubs trying to sign him. They will already know his wishes from last summer

"marquee" signings.

FFS, how many times does it have to be said? We are NOT buying a great big fecking tent.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm sure I've had this discussion on here before.

I think "marquee" is right. Of course he isn't a tent; it's a metaphor. It means that the signing itself is about more than just getting a good player that you need; it's a statement, an event, something that could be seen from far away, like a wedding with a marquee.

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/marquee

There are lots of metaphors in life so I find it surprising when people balk at this particular one: I am pretty sure "marquee signing" is the correct phrase.

Pretty sure is refers to the marquees on front of theatres. Leading stars would have their names on the front of the marquee to attract customers. They were the marquee stars of the show. Players that are popular, can attract fans and sponsors etc are seen as marquee players in much the same way. Statement signings.

Maddeningly, Wikipedia's explanation (not the only source of truth, I know) seems to mix both words ("marque" and "marquee" freely, while suggesting that "marquee" is the right one:

A marque player is an athlete who is considered exceptionally popular, skilled, or otherwise outstanding, especially in professional sports.[1] Its name comes from theater marquees, on which the names of the stars of productions in said theater are often emblazoned in order to draw spectators. Several sports leagues have specific definitions and rules regarding the designation and treatment of marque players.

70m for a 21 year old Englishman who has proven himself in a major league is a no brainer.

if it works out and he is successful with United you potentially get 10 years out of him. Like the fuss over Rooney's fee at the time, turned out to be a bargain.

if it doesn't the resale value will make sure any loss is minimal.

Split the difference and £74m is still a good price for a 21 year old considered to be a world class talent.

Villa just paid £40m for a 24 year old championship player.

Chelsea have bid £58m for a FB.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
villa paid a lot but its not a bad deal. 74 million for sancho is really overpriced you'll be alone in the bidding.
