The curious case of Anthony Martial

He’s always seemed a confidence player and right now, he has zero confidence. I’m certain if he scored a decent goal at some point it would all click and we’d get a few weeks of good Martial instead of the invisible man with the Ashley Young haircut.

I’d imagine Rash will come straight back into the side - or we might see Greenwood on the right and Sancho in for Martial on the left when Cavani is back so Martial had better hurry up and make himself undroppable

I don't know if it is injury related or just fitness at the moment but he looks a yard or so off his normal pace.

Got to say that I wouldn't really be bothered if he left now. I thought that he was going to be a great player, but he hasn't really progressed.

I think all the players looked a bit off yesterday but Martial has run out of the credit he had so does need to start performing.

I don't like to criticise too much but rhe the midfield we picked yesterday didn't help either. Let's just hope we can get through the Wolves game and come back much stronger after the international break. An additional CM wouldn't go amiss.

Poor season last year, injuries haven’t helped, lack of games. He will need a run of games to get back to top shape and form.

Let’s not forget the season he had before, he looked very good. However at the moment he clearly isn’t good enough

Diafol

Spot on. To me it is playing the right people together.

Matic and Pogba work because they are both football intelligent. And although it was only a friendly, Matic and Beekers worked for the same reason.

McFred works because they are both on the same wave length.

the invisible man with the Ashley Young haircut.

so, ashley young?

agree with most of what has been said, he is clearly better than he is currently showing, and i'm not going to write him off as he comes back from injury.

of moderate interest is that for all the flak he gets for being inconsistent, his goalscoring record for united is better than rashford's, both in terms of peaks and consistency (though rashford did come into the team when young).

as for his physique, he certainly wouldn't be the first united player over the past few years to seem to have been allowed to bulk up to a point at which it hampers his explosiveness (see also lukaku, and to a lesser extent pogba)

Martial is a world class player but he's just not fit at the minute.

I think its becoming apparent that his very good season was the exception rather than the rule.

Iv said it before and il say it again, we need a top striker, and as good as Cavani was, he wont be available week in, week out.

The demise of Martial is very odd, Ole bless him keeps giving him the chances he never affords to the likes of Beeky but it seems he just can’t take them it really is like playing with 10 men when he is up front.
I just don’t think he can handle the pressure of competition for his place and has some mental block on it.

Torres or Sanchez style drop off?

Really though... Martial has not even reached 5% of the talent of those two.

His drop off is the difference between a 45 degree and and a 40 degree angle. Minimal.

Always defended Martial under Jose, still rate him talent wise

But he's the most ball achingly frustrating player of recent times

Yesterday was like last seasons form... He needs to get fully fit and show something again, or else we need to get rid

Mason in the middle... Pogba and Sancho wide v Wolves

Not really what I said, is it?

It's unusual for a player to lose physical aspects of their game so suddenly in the way Torres/Sanchez did. But if I didn't know any better it looks as though this has happened to Martial, who since the start of the 20/21 season has just not been the explosive player we know him to be.

The issue is you thought you bought a top quality talent but he's more of player with top quality moments like Shaqiri who can produce magic but isn't an elite player.

Never will be. The sulking makes it even harder for fans to take to him.

United got robbed when buying him.

I don't think they have limitless supply, unless you know otherwise.

Lwt me help ypu out.

What you meant to ask me, was how could the club have affirded a top CF this window.

My answer would be to have used the Sancho money to sign one.

Less so than a CF given Greenwoods performances from the right plus the addition of Amad.

I suspect Sancho will be more effective wide than Greenwood, and Greenwood will be more effective through the middle than out wide. Like your post, it's just conjecture at this stage though.
