This quickly becomes an emotive issue, but my reading is that the supporters in the stadium become just another third party grouping that blame can be apportioned on. Kind of 'I want something to happen, and they're not acting in a way that I believe will make that happen'. If your engagement with the club is through broadcast and digital media only, the supporters in the ground are wallpaper, really.
This isn't really in response to this thread, but it's something I've thought about when I've read the numerous 'champions of mediocrity' styled articles this year.

OTOH the Utd fans were happy enough, they even applauded Ole off the pitch and then waited for him to sign autographs.
Why should the Glazers change anything when as it seems the fans were happy with the 0-5 mauling by Liverpool.

It's all good and well having social media teams being aware of the fan's mood but their job is to appease the fans and they are quite good at it.
Again, fan power stopped the ESL and have in the past got managers from various clubs sacked both here & abroad.
Utd fans are quite happy to protest the owners to try and get them to sell up, (never goint to happen) BUT aren't that invested in getting rid of Ole and the Glazers know it so aren't going to do anything as far as sacking him is concerned.

United fans clapped Ole off and posed for autographs after your biggest humiliation in a long time.
There's levels to this, if fans don't raise their standards the board are under no pressure too either.
