In the former list, does the monarchy occupy a similar position to ours or do they function more closely to wealthy private citizens?
Agreed Vorsprung. Correlation does not imply causation.
So having a monarchy does not imply success or failure.
So it is not a reason to abolish it.
As another by and by ,so are the Spanish !

Similar to ours I believe.

The monarchy are good for the economy and don’t have any real impact on our politics.
I couldn’t really care less about them, but in an ever changing society it’s nice to have some history and tradition still play a part.
About time this nonsense was put to bed once and for all, great opportunity to do that now, won’t happen though

It not about successful or unsuccessful democracies. Its about the fact we are subservient to a family who's anacestors won some battles centuries ago and decided they had a devine right to rule over others. While the royal family in GB doesn't necessarily actively rule, there are laws that technically give them a high degree of authority and a hell alot of privilege which is undeserved. We should have a elected head if state, who's job is the ensure our democracy adheres to the laws of the land, like a lot of countries. Our anthem should be about the people and the country, not about a single person, and we should swear allegiance to the country, not one someone born into privilege.

If we never had this charade in place at this point, and you along with the rest of the British public were given a choice to put a family in place and bestow atl these palaces, castles and land upon them and their extended family, would you see it as a good idea and vote for it?
Life moves on, there was a role for them as head of state wielding power before parliamentary democracy, and they could ennoble all their chinas that kept them in power making them incredible wealthy as a by-product.
Deference to a family and their associated nobles that are at the fagg end of the UK feudal period doesn't make any sense to me, they're more an interesting historical curiosity these days. Nice houses though

I always think of the time there was a poll to decide who should be elected president if we went down that route.
Jimmy Saville won it.
Another reason I like it is because it makes us a little different to most other countries.
