The obvious point I am making, is that, different cultures have different codes of dress. In parts of Africa both men and women wear far less than here. Ah the weather you say. But even in this past summer women don't walk about topless and men naked, even though it may have been more appropriate. For a woman going into church it's customary to cover the head, and men to uncover.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In which church is it customary for women to cover their heads?

Most of the orthodox churches did this until the 80s. Some still do in various countries to date

Christian women are encouraged to wear a head covering in church in this country.

Most are quite happy to do so.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Which country is that?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In the country I live in and where this website is based.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought JA606 was based in the UK/England?

What you've described isn't true if that's what you meant
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you saying women don’t wear hats in UK churches?

No just that it's rare imo

I know they did that in the past but personally I haven't come across a church with that requirement. It's always up to the woman if she wants to wear one. Some were a headdress to indicate membership to a guild or women's group etc

The thing is, if a church requires women to wear a headdress to be a member of that church, a woman can just go to another church where there is no such requirement. You can't say the same for Muslim women tbh.

Most of the women I know say it ‘wouldn’t be right’ to go to a wedding, funeral, baptism etc without a hat if it was being held in a church

You can as lots of muslim women do not wear hijabs or cover their heads.

There is no "compulsion" in the Quran as well. Unfortunately a lot of muslims, just like a lot of christians have not read their religious texts.

Nuns wear habits as well and to this day, there are severe penalties for taking them off. That for some reason does not irritate people as much.

But for other women a wedding is good chance to show off their fantabulous hairdo and how it resonates harmoniously with the attire.

If a woman shows up at a wedding without a hat nobody even notices. They have the choice.

Nuns commit to that lifestyle be willingly committing to serve the church. It's their choice.

They can also quit the sisterhood anytime they want and even get a severance package from the church to stabilise them in society.

Finally should women be allowed to choose for themselves whether to cover their hair.

what a stupid question. ofcourse not.

No opinion to give on this thread for the most part but was at a wedding at the weekend and there were approx 150 women there, one hat, mother of the bride and she is around 80

These sort of threads don't really deal with any of the issues brought up. Most are ignorant on the issues and may ask lay Muslims who are not Iranians or ever been to Iran about what's happening in Iran. That's equivalent to asking Brisith people to talk about and justify what Americans are doing there as they're both part of the West and have "strong" Christian influence.

If you want to know the religious view of it, you go to someone educated in the matter.

What I will say though is that it is an obligation to do certain things (or not do) if you are part of a religion. Just as Muslims are obligated to pray 5 times a day or to not drink alcohol, that doesn't remove the choice of the person to do or not do so.

Iran have their own history and culture and these tend to be then intertwined with religion and at times people from the outside will be hard pressed to separate either from each other. Once you have knowledge of both, you can see what is and isn't culture/religion.

You rarely, if ever, get news like this discussed in major new reports here.

If you havnt been in a Christian church/temple/whatever in Europe whch requires women to cover their heads and skin then you need to get out more

Cyprus and Greek are pretty hot on this. Also men dont try and go to the Westen Wall in Jerusalem further afar without a cap on your head. Its not just muslim sites.

Muslim women also commit to wearing a hijab. It is their choice. Says so in the Quran. Some people take it to extremes like in Iran, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan.

You can also quit the faith if you want and Islam is the only Abrahamic religion that gives women rights as well.
