Nuns wear habits as well and to this day, there are severe penalties for taking them off. That for some reason does not irritate people as much
====
Nuns commit to that lifestyle be willingly committing to serve the church. It's their choice.

They can also quit the sisterhood anytime they want and even get a severance package from the church to stabilise them in society.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Muslim women also commit to wearing a hijab. It is their choice. Says so in the Quran. Some people take it to extremes like in Iran, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan.

You can also quit the faith if you want and Islam is the only Abrahamic religion that gives women rights as well.

Aposty? Dunno about that.

If you havnt been in a Christian church/temple/whatever in Europe whch requires women to cover their heads and skin then you need to get out more

Cyprus and Greek are pretty hot on this. Also men dont try and go to the Westen Wall in Jerusalem further afar without a cap on your head. Its not just muslim sites.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's mostly orthodox Christians. Women have to cover their hair in Orthodox churches.

Best not to speak about things you do not understand then.

Iran have their own history and culture and these tend to be then intertwined with religion and at times people from the outside will be hard pressed to separate either from each other. Once you have knowledge of both, you can see what is and isn't culture/religion.

They are inherent.

What do you mean?

They are constituent parts of one another. This whole separation of religion and culture isn’t something that exists in Islam, and is a Western projection.

The obvious point I am making, is that, different cultures have different codes of dress. In parts of Africa both men and women wear far less than here. Ah the weather you say. But even in this past summer women don't walk about topless and men naked, even though it may have been more appropriate. For a woman going into church it's customary to cover the head, and men to uncover.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In which church is it customary for women to cover their heads?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Most of the orthodox churches did this until the 80s. Some still do in various countries to date
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know they did that in the past but personally I haven't come across a church with that requirement. It's always up to the woman if she wants to wear one. Some were a headdress to indicate membership to a guild or women's group etc

The thing is, if a church requires women to wear a headdress to be a member of that church, a woman can just go to another church where there is no such requirement. You can't say the same for Muslim women tbh.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You can as lots of muslim women do not wear hijabs or cover their heads.

There is no "compulsion" in the Quran as well. Unfortunately a lot of muslims, just like a lot of christians have not read their religious texts.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not all nuns wear habits.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've seen a few films where they don't. Not for long anyway

Millions of women in many countries don't really have the choice to wear or not wear a hijab. They are not even allowed to protest that, but there's some protests here and there. Some can't even protest the fact that they can't protest

Even in countries where they have the choice, there is still pressure from the Muslim community to wear head covering.

There's still places where you can't just quit the religion anytime you want, especially if you're a woman.

As someone who was brought up within a culture, there are definitely things which are cultural that aren't part of religion.

Examples of this can be found in practices such as FGM that's found within the culture but not in religion. Or certain superstitions such that of the "evil eye" talismen popular in Turkey and the surrounding areas or the Tabeez used by South Asians. And I can list more practices and beliefs that are not found in religion, and go against the religion people believe. Yet many would not be able to tell you that these aren't a part of religion as they found their parents and forefathers doing so.
