Why didn't they arrest Tony Blair?

ICC don't have Russia, China, USA, India, Isreal on board. Most of the countries Russia are working with to sell their commodities aren't involved.

...........

Do you really think anyone is going to arrest Putin? No, which is why no one has ever arrested Bush and Blair.

It’s symbolic more than anything. Nothing will come of it, not in the near future anyway, if ever.

The Metropolitan Police failed to arrest Jack the Ripper; who do those hypocrites think they are bringing the murderer of Sarah Everard to justice?

I fully accept that the Western world needs to go much further in holding its own leaders accountable, and I'd rather we focus on levelling the playing field that way, rather than by shrugging in the direction of genocide in Ukraine.

Anyway, Busby is at least consistent in his abject cynicism.

I’m all for a show of solidarity, Putin should be held accountable for war crimes.

I just find it strange the ICC only wants to get involved in such matters when they clearly can’t do anything about it.

It will come into effect in the unlikely event of a coup in Russia.

I'd think Putin has a list off leaders he'd like to get his hands on but'll have the same problems as they'll have getting him!..

It looks like India and China are less willing to buy Russian gas now their discounts have dropped and this will begin to affect the ruble soon. We can only hope that trend continues.

It seems Europe is going to get its gas from America (surprise) and Qatar in future so Russia need to find a long term buyer and build pipelines whilst maintaining a war. That is expensive.

Unless a major power decides to support their war effort the Russian people will feel the effect’s eventually.

It’ll take a couple of years, but eventually something has to give.

Two points.

1) The ICC is supposed to function in according to formal, legal processes. As far as I understand (and I'm ready to be corrected), it is supposed to investigate when evidence is put before it and to instigate charges if the evidence is credible. Wouldn't it undermine the credibility of the court if instead of following procedure to the letter, it decided who to indict based on pragmatic and political considerations such as probability of arrest and expected impact?

2) I would dispute the suggestion that if it's impossible to arrest Putin, there's no value in these charges. Being indicted by the International Criminal Court has significant implications for Putin. It is a huge diplomatic blow, and signals to the international community (some of which has stayed on the fence for pragmatic economic reasons) that there's a body of damning evidence around the invasion and occupation of Ukraine. It's certainly puts additional pressure on the Russian government. And aside from any direct impacts on Putin's regime, every warrant for the arrest of a dictator or war criminal is a signal to dictators and war criminals the world over that there's a risk they may face justice some time in the future.

They've been trying to arrest Omar al-Bashir (former president of Sudan) since 2009 and still not managed it.
