Diogo Costa to Chelsea?

Press here reporting €75m, but Chelsea want to pay only €25 up front with the rest in instalments over an extended period, which Porto are having none of.

A figure like €75m is (almost) always going to be a gamble on a player so young, but he’s technically very, very good.

My concern with bringing him to United was always more about the fact that he makes a good few mistakes (which literally all goalkeepers do) but really stupid ones: when he does err, he goes big, Barthez-style, and is apt to make himself look like a clown.

It doesn’t bother him, and it doesn’t matter, because 99% of the time he’s brilliant. But it’s the kind of thing that our idiotic fans would blow out of all proportion and get on his back about. “Half-decent keepers don’t make mistakes like that,” “My grandma would have stopped that,” etc.

Which wouldn’t have impacted him. But would have been incredibly annoying to have to put up with on here.

Unfortunately, the same might be true of Onana if United go down that road instead.

The advantage Onana has is he’s worked with Ten Hag before and is coming off a great performance in a CL final so fans might be more patient as they might trust the ‘process’ more knowing Ten Hag trusts him

I think it’s understandable that Porto are balking at €25m up front, btw, given that the Bottomless Pit of Saud is reportedly injecting something like €55m in cash in exchange for Ziyech, Koulibaly and Mendy. That’s petrodollars straight in the bank, and before the sale of Havertz is considered.

There is no real need to get too worried about getting an upgrade on Coco.

There has always been about 20 better regular goalkeepers in the English league system that would have been a better attribute to the team/club.

There are far more difficult positions on the field to find players to fill or upgrade.

To be honest, if mufc don't already have a more epl suited keeper in their squad than the inept current, and long-term, incumbent, then they should get rid of them as well.

Ahhhh. So it's OK for an £85m GK to make the odd howler, but when DDG does it, he is past it and a liability.

Crazy people are happy to write DDG off and replace him with 2 seemingly error prone GKs in Costa and Onnana.

DDG has been shiiit for a while now and doesn’t even have a new contract so it’s pointless trying to defend him.

All goalkeepers make errors. Schmeichel made errors. VDS made errors.

Unless a keeper is making serious errors every few games, it isn’t really an incredibly significant measure of their quality or value, as, even from a purely defensive perspective, relatively very few goals are conceded as a result of goalkeeper error.

There are multiple more significant factors.

There are probably just 4 Gks (Ederson, Allisson, Courtois, Donnarumma) that are a level above DDG.

He will certainly struggle to try and play the way he does in Italy, where the pace is much slower. I’ve seen him only a handful of times and whilst his confidence and ability on the ball are great, he also seems to make really poor decisions and give it away a lot.

I would encourage people to watch back our CL run in 99 from start to finish. Schmeichel made a lot of errors.

The problem with DDG is not that he's crap (he isn't) he's now just a pretty average keeper. Even worse he's an average keeper who can't do what ETH wants his keeper to do. If he was Superman in goal like he was for a few sesasons before the 2018 World Cup then you could argue he'd still add value. Sadly, he doesn't do that any more. Not only is he poor with his feet he's also not very commanding at all and I'd also question his bravery at times too. Whatever I think about Henderson at least you can't question the positive nature of his keeping.

DDG has got Utd out of the shat countless times...but he has an awful rick in him at the drop of a hat...or a ball

Alisson is considered one of the world best, and yet he looks like he could make an error at any time.

Don't get me wrong. DDG makes his fair share, BUT on balance he is still a very capable GK, and I think many will only realise this once he is eventually replaced.

Costa looked absolute garbage in our CL tie, he was responsible for 4 goals across the tie. Hope Chelsea sign him, it would be another Boehly disasterclass to top them all.

Yeah this guy is legit. He will be on the same level as Alisson / Ederson etc.

Really hope we don’t get Onana, he honestly makes so many errors and has a really strange / unorthodox style.

He was also available on a free transfer last summer, which again gives the impression of "he played well in one big game, let's sign him." That's probably not actually the case but it's still not great to pay 50 million for a keeper who you could have got for nothing a year previously
