It's a proper boy's club with these refs, that's what I don't like about it. They seem to want to back their own and play by their own rules rather than upset the applecart. Even these ex-ref turned pundits just want to come on and back their own mates half the time.

It’s a tough gig, you are wrong in the eyes of somebody whatever decision you give, your are refereeing 22 grown men who are all effectively cheating constantly to try and give their side an advantage and you have 60,000 fans screaming at you.

Every decision you get wrong is then replayed over and over on TV, discussed, moaned about, you can be called corrupt, incompetent or just a blind khunt.

Imagine that as your job, that sort of pressure

Awful mistake, but it's easy not to feel sorry Crybaby's FC and their dreadful fanbase.

Have to say, much as it is funny to see it happen to a big six side it is pretty shambolic. How the feck they can make such a shambles of that is quite remarkable.

It was amusing at first but now we all should be laying into PGMOL along with Liverpool so we can get rid of this farcical mess.

the communication is dreadful..
their findings supposedly now suggest implementing new processes to improve communication ??? WTF.. they're only just thinking of that now...

why was there not prescribed phrases that needed to be used to confirm such decisions set in stone from the introduction of var.. it's so bloody obvious it would be needed.

i mean, how hard would it be to have a rule that the on-field ref cannot restart the game until var has said a prescribed phrase exactly, and in duplicate: 'confirmed. player is offside' or 'confirmed. player handballed' or 'confirmed. goal is good'.... etc....

Yeah, that was the worst bit really. A group of guys just waffling using barely oxford dictionary words with nobody taking control at all. Pathetic.

Doesn't England tell the central ref that it's off? That part doesn't seem to appear in the subtitles of the audio.

Anyway, you are spot on. It's a hard thing to explain to someone who has not observed it for themselves and it's one of the reasons I always say the PGMOL should be disbanded and anyone associated with it put to pasture. Break up that boys club and start afresh.

At the very least, separate VAR from the refs and have VAR experts in there. In their attempt to retain control over games this boys club implemented some terrible rules for VAR. You can't take an onfield ref who doesn't even know how to operate VLC player on his phone and stick him in the VAR room.

All the more reason to actually take your job seriously and pay close attention to what's going on. The refs know, or should know in advance that allowing negligence and carelessness to creep in in a job like that is suicidal.

A lack of real consequences, and their colleagues, friends in the media, pundits and fans like you always arguing their case and making excuses for them has led to a serious lack of accountability which inevitably leads to negligence. Every job has a level of incompetence that simply cannot be tolerated.

Furthermore, when it's howler after howler all season long at least they can act like they recognise the problem as that's the first step to solving it. Instead they respond to queries by elbowing aggrieved players in the face and laughing in the manager's face.

So arrogant and ignorant, wallowing in the power and knowing no one will do fack all no matter how hard they fack up, meanwhile just making blunder after blunder on the pitch.

Fack off the PGMOL for the good of everyone. They're rotten. The Tories of football.

I would go for all that if we also started handing out proper punishment for players cheating. 22 grown men trying to cheat for 90 minutes is exhausting to ref and incredibly difficult for the on field ref to keep up with. Start handing out 5 game bans for diving and watch that “dark art” die a long overdue death. Ban players from surrounding the ref when he makes a decision they don’t like, stop managers from intimidating Refs.

Yes standards should be higher but the usual moaners about refs have never reffed a season in their lives, they don’t have the cojones to do it - it’s bloody tough and yet all they get is whining about getting things wrong, yet the constant cheating by players is either glossed over or in some cases applauded as “clever behaviour”

The time wasting being added on is the best change to the rules they have made in a long time - you want to take 45 seconds per goal kick, go ahead it doesn’t matter we will just add the time on - that form of cheating will die off this season

if... and i do mean if... var can sort itself out and stop making stupid mistakes.. and attempts to simulate fouls/injuries can be accurately verified..
or when players ask for other players to get carded.. or surround the ref.
yes. give them a yellow card (every single time... don't allow ref's to pick and choose who to card/not card for it) but also, like in rugby.. for 1st yellow.. send them off for 10 minutes..
having to be a little more careful being on a yellow is one thing.. actively hurting your team's chances by being off the field for 10 minutes should really cut the antics out..

That's all fine but in this case it's obvious what is right and what is wrong. It's what these people sign up for anyway in terms of expecting fan criticism and scrutiny from the media, that's the nature of the game. Just concentrate on trying to get the decisions right.

There were so many voices there I couldn't tell who was saying what, which is another problem. And it sounds too informal for my liking, not professional enough. I want it to sound like they're working for NASA, not that they're a bunch of pals watching a match in the pub. But that's what it goes back to with my original point, they are all pals and this comes through in how they go about their jobs and make decisions. Mike Dean confirmed it recently, when he said he made a wrong decision based on covering for a mate.

I agree with this.

Hard to make out what was going on, but I got the sense that there was some confusion over what the on-field/referee's decision was.

Surely the process should begin with a straightforward, clear communication of what the on-field decision was, and what should be reviewed.

But yeah, the bit that really confused me was the assistant VAR saying, "He's played him. He's gone offside."

There was all sorts of incompetence there from people not watching the game properly to the communication aspect.

Good thing is that with the embarrassing audio released and this having become such a high profile mistake that it's bound to lead to changes now (hopefully for the better) in terms of the structure of how they go through the process and how they communicate.

All those people that complained about Liverpool's response should be eating their words because it will have ultimately led to changes being implemented.

The audio shows them to be casual and unprofessional.

I don't think it goes beyond this and an event such as this will be a huge wake up call to the consequences of getting something so badly wrong.

There needs to be utter professionalism in how they operate, none of the "matey" stuff and high fiving after a decision. It needs to be like a military operation, conducted as if the consequences are almost life or death.

Yeah it should be like in Gordon Ramsey's kitchen or something. "I'm not your f**king mate!! It's Gordon or Chef".

All we get are a group of incompetents too weak and matey to tread on anyone's toes.
