Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope. Remastered.

Still the best action movie of all time.

Return of the Jed the best one for me.

Remember seeing that in the cinema.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If anything The Empire Strikes Back is best one but the first one sets the tone.

Terminator 2 for me

OP you can’t have John Wick on that list and not include Equalizer. Keanu legend but Denzel a level above on acting

Bloodsport is obviously a close number two to Gladiator.

tricky bit is figuring out exactly what counts as an action film....the french connection, for instance, is better than anything named so far, but i'm guessing that it doesn't really count. and as the op says, alien is comfortably better than any of its sequels, including its immediate one, but probably goes down as sci fi/horror rather than action.

in terms of more obviously action films that haven't yet been named:

north by northwest (which i am claiming as the greatest action film of all time)
ronin
assault on precinct 13 (original)
hard boiled
escape from new york
the driver
drive

I do like Fury Road overall.

I know the idea was to make a film that was basically all a chase, but the chase aspect got a bit much for me. Even in speculative fiction there's only so much I'll believe, and some of it was just a bit silly. I found myself enjoying the parts that weren't 100mph more than those that were.

We should debate this. Will be like debating the meaning of world class.

It’s not even the best Mad Max film.

I can’t take to John Wick at all.

How many fvcking times do they say non communicato or whatever. Zzzzzz

Oooooo I’m an elite assassin but I have to stick to some rules and I have a special coin that grants me safe passage.

Never watched any, but was thinking I'd give them a try as people are always banging on about them. You've made them sound really crap. Probably won't bother.

John wick is pretty cool if you suspend belief. I liked them, great fighting choreography
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally I thought the fight choreography rendered those films literally unwatchable. Absolutely ridiculous.

Mad Max 2.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Had a feeling you'd say that. When I had Covid last year I decided to spend the time watching all the Mad Max films. For some reason that's the one I remember least. I'll have to give it another go.

And before anyone says otherwise, The Rock is far superior to both Face/Off and Con Air. Let's just get that out of the way.

I haven’t seen any of them in years, to be fair. Beyond the Thunder Dome is the most memorable because of Tina Turner.

A lot of Mad Max 3 is very reminiscent of the (amazing) sci-fi novel Riddley Walker.
