Like it or like it not - this is how it is. In places such as the Far East viewers are tuning in to watch these teams. I think if you looked for worldwide viewing figures per club you would be surprised at the gulf between these 4 teams and the other 'smaller' clubs

From an article on the BBC in September...

"At no point in the interview does he call for United to get a larger chunk of the overseas rights. In fact he goes on to say that "it's fair" to have an equal share.

With the club's owners, the Glazer family, increasingly looking abroad for revenues and planning a share flotation in Singapore, Sir Alex's employers may take issue with his views.

But the League's chief executive Richard Scudamore will be delighted to see Sir Alex's comments as it lends even greater weight to his equitable model, a stark contrast to the situation in Spain where La Liga's lack of collective solidarity has allowed Real Madrid and Barcelona to take the lion's share of TV revenues and thus turn the competition into an annual two horse race."

So if these teams broke away from future TV deals, you think that premiership TV rights would be worth what they are now ?

Liverpool are only a 'worldwide brand' due to thier 'history'.. If you keep going the way you are you will fall well behind Manchester United, City, Chelsea and maybe eventually even us!

@LastChanceForHangingBaskets: Irrelevant, they still need other clubs to play.

Everything 'LastChanceForHangingBaskets (U1826) ' states is true...but i dont agree with it. However i think UEFA should step in and make a ruling for all clubs on it as if not we could all get left behind by Barca/madrid or anyone else who can persuade their own FA/Prem to accept it....

Do you consider Liverpool a 'big 4' team?

I see it as

United/City/Chelsea

Then

Arsenal/Spurs/Liverpool

Then the rest!

In terms of worldwide appeal and support, in terms of worldwide marketing and advertising then along with Man Utd., Liverpool actually form a 'big 2' in terms of revenue. I do imagine though that both Arsenal and Chelsea are catching up.

To suggest that Spurs are anywhere near that level is just ridiculous

Thudd, fans from abroad will always be more glory supporters than we are at home therefore your listing of teams is probably right. at present

Views from abroad during last couple of years has bound to have effected Liverpools popularity, so from their pov i dont think they are a 'big 4' team.

In this country i still think they are one of the biggest teams, as they would say 'they have some weight historically if not in the present'.

History only becomes a dirty word if you dont really posses on.
In the last 6 years, Liverpool have been to 2 champions league finals, a semi final, and two quarter finals, winning the competition in 2005.
In 2009, they were uefas number 1 ranked club in europe.
So lets not talk as though Liverpool international renown was a hangover from the seventies and eighties.
As for keeping going the way we are, well I hope we do, we've improved on last season, have new owners, sit handily in the league, with a good manager, always great support, and some real talent throughout the squad.

I'm talking about the levels I mention in ragards to performances on the pitch and chances of finishing in those positions

Top 3 - United, City, Chelsea

2nd tier of 3 - Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool

Then followed by either Villa, Newcastle, Everton ect!

Those are not based on financial positions or worldwide brands!

Liverpool may well be a 'worldwide brand' but to attempt to make a 'quick buck' is greedy in my opinion!

@scouse-heart: Barca aren't that dominant in Europe, and their transfer spend this summer was in a similar area in terms of expenditure to your own. The money situation does however make their league a complete walkover. But yeah they won this year, last year was Inter v Munich, year before was Barca, then you've got to go back three seasons to the time they won it last. Nobody was that fussed when Madrid managed it every other year three times in the 90s, I fail to see the issue.

posted on 12/10/11

regardless of who sees clubs as bigger than others, this is nothing more than a potential money grab and in no way will benefit the league. I for one am happy with the stature of my club. Of course I'd like us to be able to pay more in wages but not at the risk of selling out to players who dont care about the club one bit.
All I know is that in this case Ferguson was right about negotiating your own deals.....

Maybe I have misinterpreted the article but I thought it was about certain clubs and revenue from overseas TV rights

It's not about whose bigger - I will say Liverpool and you will (wrongly) say Spurs.

There's no point trying to debate anything if people are going to veer off topic

thing is lads i agree that this is a bad move. I know that the money for Barce usually is made by the academy set up etc but the way football in general is going the whole of the prem will fall behind the other competetive teams in europe due to them having more financial muscle due to tv rights. I agree that not negotiating individual tv rights will make the prem a much better league...but (as always) i feel the UEFA make it an unfair playing field...

THudd - Captain Obvious (U1029) ...seriously son...i apologise but come on lets not make this another we are better than you thread as this is not what its about...unless you are albert as he will try and turn anything into that...

Sorry didn't mean to go off-topic!

Worldwide brand wise Liverpool and United are up there in regards to PL clubs

Can't disagree with that

"History only becomes a dirty word if you dont really posses on."

History doesn't pay the bills. Success +/- Sugga Daddies do.
THudds' 'tier 2' teams need to raise their game.

And we can only hope that the void between tiers 1/2, and 2/rest are not effectively made unbridgeable due to financial incumbency (otherwise there's no real point of the PL other than to get into UEFA tournaments) .
