Thing is with Trump going on people aren't going there and are at pains to point out they don't want to be like them. Halifax was full of tourists from Quebec when I went, with a bunch of them telling me they'd changed usual plans of going to NY, sold their cabins/places in Florida etc

I just felt if I was making a point to highlight the difference in a countries (particularly the size of Canada) regions. Then I would use a more appropriate scale.
Didn't realize you would be so sensitive young J.

The States silly. It's all well and good pointing out geographical closeness but culturally they're shifting apart quickly. Obviously there's exceptions but in the main, for sure. People I speak to would much sooner go Costa Rica or Mexico for some sun than California or whatever.
And colleagues are always nice. Go hang at a bar in Calgary. They're nice relative to Londoners but it's not the same as the stereotypical Canadian Nice. At all

Oregon surprised me with the amount of rednecks going on given the reputation Portland has. PNW USA hangs by a thin veneer IMO

Most of rural US is rednecks.
Where I am you look at any county that isn't between Baltimore/DC or Frederick and it is red & probs have Trump signs and siblings who make babies with eachother. Which reminds me I owe J a response.

Right yeah. I think that's my general takeaway from traveling a lot of Canada by now. The par is a nice person who's softly spoken, interested in you, welcoming to newcomers etc. The base level of friendliness is high

Meaning it's kinda the opposite of what you're describing Edin. It would be rare to run into a neighborhood that makes you feel uncomfortable like that. Some areas of Alberta, Thunder Bay. But they're notorious for it rather than the mean

Most the rural people are really nice if you are white. Especially if you get chatting to them in some random bar. Just don't have the intelligence, experience or culture to know better.

Also I thought this was overstated based on my visit this summer. I tried my best in broken French to be polite but even in central tourists spots they were friendly n that. Was kinda disappointed I didn't get a proper rude waiter experience
