The fact this game comes before the FA Cup is a real sucker punch. Liverpool will play their strongest team now and I really can't see us getting anything from it. We'd also need to take a lead to Anfield to stand any chance. It's a real shame because if it is Newcastle in the final, I'd fancy us purely because we've got the greater trophy pedigree.
We've been so hard done by with the draw in this cup.
If we go gung-ho tonight it'll tell us everything we need to know about Ange and his inability to manage games tactically. What Newcastle did last night was an absolute masterclass. Picked them off and sat in. I'd love to see us do that, just once, and put the result ahead of the performance. We won't though. We'll go all out attack, leave our makeshift defence exposed and wonder why we've shipped 4 goals at home.
I'm banking on blind hope at this stage. Reckon we've got less than a 5% chance of going through. We'd need an early Liverpool red to do it.

Conte, is that you
I think we a re capable of getting something from the game. We cannot go gung-ho but at the same time, parking the bus will also not work, especially given who we have available in the back line. I think we just need to be selective and intelligent when we go full Angeball.
It is a weird one. LFC will always fancy overturning a game at Anfield, so they may well not see any great urgency to get the tie done. While we will not want to be out of it so may also be more circumspect. nil nil written all over it

no such thing as hard done by with cup draws unless city have paid for the warm balls.
this is like the man utd game. a lot of people tlaking smack and not knowing much about football.
spurs will give it a right go tonight. LFc will need to front up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
draws are 100% luck so to get City United and Liverpool is a tough one.
At least Newcastle look like they're going through so I'll have a team to back in the final.

Yeah, I really don't see the best way of approaching this game. Focus on defending and, like you say, we're leaning on the weakest part of our game. Go gung-ho and we leave that same defence woefully exposed. Maybe we just take defeat on the chin and hope we get more luck in Europe and the FA Cup when we have our defenders back on board.

I think we may surprise a few. The performance vs NUFC was very encouraging, full of fight and spirit and we were a tad unlucky. Look how NUFC comfortably beat Arsenal.
For once, we have a small advantage in that we played home Saturday morning and now home weds. Last time we played LFC we played Thursday night vs Utd, big game, lots of drama, depleted squad and the same guys had to raise themselves to meet LFC on the Sunday. LFC had an easier draw, rested players and had a day mores rest. We looked leggy and they looked at it.
So a bit more of an even playing field in that respect, albeit we are still bare bones. Think we will be way more competitive despite the injuries.
The approach will say a lot about Ange and his ability to tweak for certain games and situations in games. The approach more than the result will be telling. Given the injuries and respective form we cannot expect to beat them but, if defeated, the manner of a it will be one of those things that will tell fans and the hierarchy a lot about Ange's ability in a clutch game. It will be some of the strongest evidence yet of whether he has the smarts to be a proper success.
We all know what sort of performance we want to see, and tactics that reflect the threat of the opposition, our own weaknesses right now and the fact we probably cannot be the Ange team he wants right now with available personnel. If we see that sort of smart performance then even a small loss is not the biggest disaster. If we just go toe to toe and get ripped up then groundhog day!
I got a feeling we will do something today. Feeling confident surprisingly

If I was to find any reason to be optimistic I would say that the performance against Newcastle showed a team that was still with Ange that put in a spirited effort against opposition near the top and in very good form. Probably the best performance we've had while suffering a loss for a while, if you can use that as a small consolation.
The reasons to be pessimistic are everything else.
