I tried to warn you about McTominay

The system he's in is perfect for his skill set. Our system is not. That, combined with the fact that his athleticism gives him a bigger competitive advantage in Italy than in England, is why he's doing so well at Napoli. The transfer was a good one for all three parties.

He was played out of position in our team, and still popped up with important goals from midfield. I think RA would have loved a player like McTominay and would likely play him further forward. He was also important for defending set pieces because of his ariel threat and off the ball intelligence.

No saying he's Real Madrid quality but worthy of an extra 12-15 points per season per season. I#d feel stronger going into the Europa semis with him in the squad.

So? He was facking shiiiiiit for us.

Let's set aside that he was sold at a time when the club envisaged continuing with 4231. I still don't see him as an elite player in Amorim's system. He's pretty good at crashing the box. We know he has never been at a high level at PL level either as a dribbler, a playmaker or making runs behind the defence, which are key requirements of the 10s.

Red Russian he’s far better then anyone we have as a 10 except Bruno and would be a far better striker than anyone we have also.

Brilliant stuff, OP.

In 2023 you tried to warn us that McTominay was a good squad player.

A pure work of genius there.

Wow that was the very definition of a warning

So happy for the lad. He seems to have made the perfect move from footballing and personal perspectives.

The fans seem to absolutely love him and hopefully he’ll be lifting that Série A trophy in a few short weeks’ time. Just checked Napoli’s run-in and they couldn’t have asked for an easier run of fixtures.

I liked McT, thought he was a good squad player and the type of player that any manager would like around the squad.
He would have been ideal as part of the squad in any of SAF's teams. But when he left, he was not the midfielder we hoped he could be and as an attacking midfielder, he wasn't going to dislodge Bruno.
So he had a bit-part role, which he did well in, but he was never going to be first choice and it was for a team that wasn't a dominating winning team.

He needed more games and wanted to start regularly so had to go. I am glad he is flourishing, I hope he keeps it up for the next few seasons, but it was just one of those situations where you wish the player well.

More home-grown players could maybe learn from plying their trade abroad - they seem to be narrow-minded from that point of view. It doesn't work out for everyone, but for McT, it wasn't just a footballing choice, but a 'let's get the most out of life choice' also.

Yep, it’s great to see. He seems to be loving his time in Naples.

In their defence (kind of), I think we’d probably see more British players spending stints on the continent if the wages matched up. The average first team player at Benfica, Ajax, Brugge or Lyon is earning somewhere between 10% and 20% of their PL contemporary. Outside the top two or three clubs in each league, the wages in Spain and Italy also aren't really comparable.

OP , unlike some, I am going to put my hands up and state, you were right.

At the time, for what he was asked to do, I do believe McT was atrocious at most of his showings. When I do reflect and having watched some of his games now, there’s no doubt he was mismanaged, and there is no doubt he can do a job for this team.

The Italian league being slower and his physic does help him no doubt.

Fair play to him and you were right.

He was right. He said he was a good squad player.

I think everyone knew his best attributes were crashing the box and chipping in with goals. And he’s playing in a team and setup that allows him to do that.

Serie A and La Liga just aren’t as good as the PL also, which is why players like McTominay, Antony, Darmian etc are able to find their best form in Italy, Spain etc.

In any case I’m delighted for McT - he’s one of our own and he’s on the brink of a league title and seemingly having a great season.

Respect. I appreciate emotionaly mature people who can admit they were wrong - especially on here.

No shame in that.

And yet most still rejected that notion. If the implication is that I'm stating the obvious - why did most reject the idea? I'm not claiming to be a genius - I'm claiming that some of the cocky/dismissive people on here no absolutely nothing about football or emotional maturity.

I agree with this sentiment - if what you had said in the article link was that McT will score a decent number of goals at Napoli and be a key figure for them, then that is really making a statement.

But what you said originally wasn't exactly earth-shattering. Just sounds you are trying to give yourself credit...............you know what they say about self-praise................

Fair enough. At that time he was still our player so hard to know where he would go and how he would be utilised but I take your point.

All I was trying to point out in the original article is that he shouldn't be sold. Would be a necessary player for us. I don't think any of us could predict what happened next to be fair.

I disagree that most on here already new because most wanted to sell - whereas I was making the point that he was needed. That being said, I appreciate why you saw it that way.

Ultimately I don't think the club really wanted to sell him, but McT wanted more game time and we couldn't give him that if everyone was fit, in ETH's system.
Perhaps things would have been different under Amorim, we will never know, but it never ever felt truly right for McT here.

I think he has just found the right club for him and is having a dream first year in Italy.

The next decision for McT is if other bigger clubs start to show an interest, does he consider a move or stay where he is.................
