Yep, good luck to him and his family.
Really grew to like him. Big character.
Adios Junior.

Junior is a classic example of how you can really turn things around - fabulous last season, wish him all the best.

Interesting comment by Firpo - if true - as reported by the Beeb:

“This club has truly felt like home, and staying was something I was ready for, but that possibility was never on the table.”

Mmmmmm.

… especially when Popey writes:

“The Dominican Republic international was offered a new deal at Elland Road but is expected to re-join Real Betis on a free transfer.”

Deal or no deal, Firpo was outstanding for us last season and was an integral part of our drive to promotion. His header against Sheffield United was season defining, in my view. And by all accounts, a thoroughly decent individual. Muchas gracias, Junior, best wishes on your return to Betis!

When Firpo signed we were 9th in The Premier League. He came in at &60k a week

The contract he was offered recently reflected that we weren’t going to the premier league level at 9th, but likely to be fighting relegation.

He rejected that cos Real Betis offered £78k a week.

Can’t blame him. Can’t blame Leeds

Good footballer, not a PL LB
Actually not a LB
Not being critical just as I see it
Pity couldn't keep him

Spot on, 2020, more of a wing back in my view, but not much call for them these days. Perfectly suited to Spain, where they play tight, tehnical passes through the midfield. I would not be surprised to see him getting a call-up next season. Not bad for a free transfer, for Betis.

Will go down as a cult hero for me. So few players manage to turn their perception round so completely. Think he'd have been fine in PL imo. Suspect he will be a real hit at Betis (pun definitely intended).

Good luck, Junior! I better see a mural of him lying down with the Championship trophy one of these days

Don't think we saw the best of him when we were in the Prem. He said himself he had injuries he was playing through in his first season. Was excellent last season and very good defensively. Underrated by a lot of our fans.

Read over and over so many fans who said they didn't rate because he couldn't defend and that he should be nowhere near the team.
Probably over the last two seasons, if you take the two seasons as a whole, we didn't have many better players on aggregate.
Other than the game where his "winning goal" was chalked off by Meslier's balls up, he seemed to always play with a smile on his face and I liked his spirit this last two years.
Glad he turned it around, good luck for the future Junior.

Pity we can't keep Rothwell, or even buy him, just don't get it, he adds so much experience. We have now lost 3 very good players, Solomon, Rothwell, and now Firpo.!!! Hope they know what they are doing.

Saw Sebastiaan's(our latest signing) interview - very sound, grounded, and articulate guy.

-------------------------------

bit of stretch that Lubes..

we give 'cult hero' tag out to far too many players, far too easily.

Firpo was brilliant last season, but come on, he was in the championship and for one reason or another he failed with us in the premier league (like so many did).

plenty of fans wanted him gone... and I read on here a few times even last season that we still needed a LB.

played great last season... but can think of a tonne of players who deserve that cult hero tag more than him.

I like the player, always have done, maybe because he was a Bielsa signing who we got from Barcelona.

Andy Hughes is a cult hero and Firpo is definitely a much better player than he was.

I can see Firpo being a cult hero for a lot of fans.

It's about the story and the bloke as well as the player.

Cult heroes are less about what they accomplished or did and more about what they represent. Firpo went from beneath the floor level to being arguably the face of our promotion, scoring a season-defining goal, turning a chant of mockery into a chant of power.

He's exactly what a cult hero should be. In the same way Hughes was never thr best player but earned the fans respect through application and versatility, always giving what he could for the shirt, wherever he was asked to play.

hmm, points understood... but its a personal thing a cult hero, Firpo not for me..

for me, cult hero's are those players that have been through the mill with us... I think Firpo has had easy in comparison.

Jemaine Beckford for example, with us in the very very dark days.

Carl Shutt, another one, not the best player in the world but scored an equally important goal.

Firpo doesn;t qualify for me

get this, but was about the team as whole IMO.. Firpo played his part.. but never a cult hero for me

posted on 3/7/25

I think also, a cult hero is somebody that lives in the memories sometimes..

as much as I like Firpo, are we really going to remember him that fondly in say 20 years time?

how many years with us?, how many good seasons?

Always a good footballer, wrongly slaughtered by some because he's not a LB
However I will probably forget about him in a few days and not worth big wages.

this, Promo, and that;s my point.. cult hero's aren't forgotten about as easily as that.

good footballer, had his problems, turned it round, but a massive stretch to give him the title of 'cult hero' IMO.
