Elvis - the inventor of rock and roll.
—
Elvis was a fraud and his musics largely forgettable
----------------------------------------------------------------------
WTF
Elvis broke down cultural barriers by merging Black and white musical traditions at a time of deep segregation. He’s influenced generations of artists — calling him forgettable is just ridiculous.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not a fan, think he’s a bit shiiit to be honest. Plus he nicked his music from african American blues artists. Beatles were far more influential than elvis imo
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're entitled to your incorrect opinion.
Elvis openly credited Black artists (Fats Domino, BB King, Rosetta Tharpe) and helped bring their sound to a mainstream audience that was otherwise ignoring it. Without him, the Beatles — who btw loved Elvis — wouldn't have been the band they were.
Quote from BB King by the way:
“Elvis didn’t steal any music from anyone. He just had his own interpretation of the music he’d grown up around — Black gospel, blues, country.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They moved far beyond the limitations of Elvis’s music. Easily more influential,
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Your goalposts are shifting I see...
Of course they moved beyond Elvis — just like many artists moved beyond the Beatles later on. That’s what influence looks like. Elvis laid the foundation they built on. Dismissing him because others expanded the genre is like saying the Beatles weren’t influential because Radiohead or Kendrick Lamar evolved further.
Cheeky little quote for you baz:
"Before Elvis, there was nothing."
— John Lennon
Newton at 1 and by a bit of a distance and I’d put Einstein at 2 probably.
That’s in a literal sense. The rest is personal preference, the arts, etc.
You’ve probably got to have someone like Ghengis Khan in there though, someone responsible for an astonishing amount of death or something. Flip side is someone like Jenner who cured smallpox.

Wouldn't rank them but I'd go for some group of these.
Johannes Gutenberg, Constantine the Great, Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Charlemagne, Karl Marx, Thomas Jefferson, Augustus Caesar, Solon, Genghis Khan, Tim Berners Lee. Probably a bunch more.
Genuine argument for Gutenberg being amongst the most significant people to ever live. The invention of the printing press changed the way the world worked and the availability of information.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yet still no figures from the industrial revolution?

The answer to this will depend on which part of the world you live in or come from and what curriculum or education system you went through.
You see, history is a narrative. For insurance, you have to ask yourself what did these "inventors" actual invent that hadn't been invented or conceptualized already. Very little if you actually study history instead of narratives that were established and hammered down throats when white supremacy was at its peak.
The fact that a guy that built the nuclear bomb gets a mention tells you everything you need to know about the narrative in your particular part of the world.
