The theme from 'the basil brush show' would be very apt.
BOOM BOOM.
The Jersey Budd effort is dreary, and should be accompanied by the tired waving of cigarette lighters.
I think part of the problem with this is that it has to be a meaningful song in some way. It's like having "Chelsea Dagger" playing when we scored a few seasons back - it didn't mean anything. What we do have is the post horn gallop, and at least When You're Smiling is our song.
I think we should be very wary of copying other clubs on this - better to be the trend setter than the trend follower, which is why we're rightly proud of being the first club to introduce the remembrance fixture.
If I ever knew, I have forgotten - why is "When You're Smiling" our song? I agree with Ruddington that it is a bit of a dirge.
I also agree with Dunge that we shouldn't feel bound to have our "own" song. One either does or doesn't have one "naturally", and if not any attempt to adopt one inevitably falls into the hands of whizz-kid media types who proceed to treat us like dolts.
There is nothing at all wrong with a very very loud and sustained COME ON LEICESTER !!!!!!, I reckon.
What I have noticed in recent years is the lack of standard chants at our club, there used to be a good 20-30 in the repertoire, for example- "We hate Nott'm Forest--- but Leic. we love you" to the tune of land of Hope and Glory, "Oh when the Blues go maching in", where have all these old chestnuts disappeared to?
I know what you mean, DM. But it's worth remembering that there was a time when those Liverpool, Stoke etc songs were *not* traditional at those clubs. At some point, they were tried out as new songs, found to be better than the respective clubs' tired old tunes (presumably), and adopted into the regular repertoire.
I agree that copying other clubs looks very tacky (unless you're copying, say, Boca Juniors en hommage), but there's nothing wrong with trying something new. And it really doesn't have to have a club 'link' (Stoke have FA to do with Delilah), it just needs to work as a song people like to join in singing.
I completely agree, Fatfox - Sometimes these things just fall into place and there's no harm with something new coming along - take Hey Jude for example. But as Malling suggests, it rarely works for a song to be "forced" on a set of fans as the fans have to take responsibility for it themselves.
Did we invent the chant of "Leicester" to Hey Jude, or dis we copy it from another club?
I know many clubs do it now and I'd like to claim it as "our chant" because it's great.
Agreed, these things can't be imposed. Problem is, though, that they don't tend to arise naturally these days. I say 'these days' because I think it's fair to suggest that contemporary hits tend not to be singalong-style melodic. No rap song hasthe same potential as I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles.
Songs such as You'll Never Walk Alone (#1 in 1963) and Delilah (#2 for Tom in 1968 and #7 for Alex in 1975) will have first been heard at football ground when played across PA systems as the latest chart hits, and turned out (without any forcing) to be ones that fans liked to join in with – so they stuck. Hey Jude (#1 in 1968 and #12 in 1976) comes into the same category.
New singalong tunes are not coming along in any numbers these days. And even at festivals, the songs people *do* sing along to are things like Radiohead's Creep – a favourite of mine, but a non-starter as a football anthem!
I think what is perhaps needed is for someone to make a long-list of potential songs (some of them decades old), and have them played one or two per match (maybe one pre-kick-off and one in the interval) and see if any just happen to be picked up on by some of the crowd. If anything emerges, brilliant – an anthem chosen by the crowd and not forced upon them. If nothing does, well, at least they'll all have been given a chance.
When You're smiling is our tune, end of. Adopting another anthem would be completely tinpot imo.
The Jersey Budd version is very poor though.
I'm not suggesting we play it before the match (though I'd love it to replace the Black Eyed Peas rubbish that comes on at the end of the game) but the Louis Armstrong version is the proper one and the tune we should be singing it to. It is not too slow to chant, in fact we chant it way too fast and that is why it doesn't sound as good as it should. If it was more slow and in tune it would sound amazing.
I'm still in the dark - exactly why is "When You're Smiling" our tune..?
We needs "Release Me" by our very own " ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK"
Malling , I've never identified with it either !
burbage fox, great idea lets adopt engleberts release me!!
'I'm still in the dark - exactly why is "When You're Smiling" our tune..?'
I read in the Mercury a couple of years ago that drunk Leicester fans used to sing it in the pub in the 60s Then they just decided to sing it at the football and it caught on.
Please release me let me go, has some mileage for Leicester fans of an older generation than me but i'd sing along.
It could be our Delilah.
Far better to sing than what's our song called ? - "Sorry I can never remember it."
Atmosphere at the King Power? Is there any atmosphere at the KIng Power?
Forests will improve their atmosphere next season , 2 matches v Notts County ............
On a slightly different point regarding atmosphere, can you remember fans bringing balloons and ripping up there sporting blue paper before kick off and then releasing them as the players walked on the pitch at the start of the game? That used to get everyone going....
Please release me, let me go,
For I don't love you any more…
Nah. That was DJ Campbell's theme song.
"Forests will improve their atmosphere next season , 2 matches v Notts County"
I wouldn't be too sure of that.
County look like outside bets for promotion.
'Atmosphere at the King Power? Is there any atmosphere at the KIng Power?'
It's OK, I wouldn't expect you to be able to identify what an atmosphere is, I just remember you lot with surprised and confused looks on your faces when we sung in August. Singing is an alien concept to you lot.
