Enjoy your retirement, Chick.

Does that mean we'll be seeing more of you on JA606 now?!

A friend of mine hung up his boots a couple of seasons back for the very same reason as yourself. His club lost a few experienced players that year and consequently found themselves on the brink of being relegated the following season.

However, the old guard came to the rescue à la Scholes and helped ensure the dreaded drop didn't happen in the end.

He carried on playing for another season after that before finally calling it a day last year.

It's never over 'til the fat lady sings.

I didn't play for a team until I was 17.
Then scored on my debut.
Won the local Sunday League 5th, 4th, 3rd and 2nd division titles in 6 years of playing.
Won the Kent Sunday Junior Trophy.

Retired at 23 due to being an alcoholic drúggie who preferred to be still partying at 1030 on a Sunday morning rather than running around in the freezing cold.

D'Jeezus,

Retired at 23 due to being an alcoholic drúggie who preferred to be still partying at 1030 on a Sunday morning rather than running around in the freezing cold.

======================

Looking back, i cant believe i used to get up on a Sunday morning after some of the states we used to get in on a Saturday night - to run around a freezing pitch & PAY for the pleasure of doing it.

What the hell is that all about?

Great artcle Chicken

I hung up my boots a few yrs ago when i tore ligaments in both calfs

My dad and his friend formed a kids team in Wokingham berks called reeves Rangers, we were the best team around and won everything

there have about 8 teams now

Moved away when i was 11 and i joined a team called Franconians.. we lost our first game 37..0

Played for local pub team but it was a bit brutal in our area with fights etc and some hasty teams so knocked it on the head and i was to busy going to Tottenham , home and away

My Boy plays and is a good little player and brainwashed him from when he was born to support spurs.

Its just a kick around in the park for me now days..<Ok>

It got to the stage where it was not enjoyable anymore. Half the problem was the team I played in had a bit of a reputation, to the extent we were threatened with expulsion from the league. A fair number of our games had punch ups and the likes, we were getting players sent off a lot and struggled to field a team due to suspensions (one player got 2 years ban because he was sent off twice in 2 games...).

I personally only got booked once, for dissent, but the fines a couple of our players had to pay over a season were making it pointless them playing.

Played CB for my local club for years. Won a couple of leagues but nothing major. I gave it up when I was about 31 I think it was went thru a bit of a bad time and brought it all onto the field. Got sent off a couple times and was trying to start fights every time I played so I knocked it on the head cos I was being an idiot. Loved it though when I played.

I was ore like DJM. A drunk from about 13 (only occassionally then) and more interested in all weekend partying (drink, drugs and raves) than playing, although I did play for a few pub teams in that time. I was slow rubbish at tackling but was great at passing and even had people open mouthed at times and saying things like "I cant believe YOU just played that pass".

When I reached 25 and my life style started to take its toll (I used to wake up with my left side of my body completely numb after a session during the last few months). I then had a very powerful experience at a mates church and when I went out the following Friday I went from drinking 40 pints the Friday before to drinking just 4 pints and not being able to drink any more, the first miracle I ever experienced. This was the start of a new more normal lifestyle which included playing football more regularly. A few months into it a stamped me because I made him look a bit stupid a couple of times and damaged my ankle ligamentsd. They were never strong enought ot play regularly after that.

I joined my local boys team at the age of 11. We went from division 1 to bottom of division 3 (the lowest division) in consecutive seasons. we even went a season without winning a game. I used to cry after every game

But then our manager called it a day and a new one came on and our fortunes changed. Actually it wasnt down to the manager one bit. it was down to the fact that another local team folded so we got a few of their players. We did well that season and the next got promotion to the second division. stayed there for a few years until, well recently. the league stopped at u17 so i joined the mens team. Didnt get much game time but enjoyed training with them.

I quit the team as of this season as I moved to London for uni. I tried getting in my uni team but 150 people showed up for trials. I didnt make the cut as they were overly impressed by the quick skilful ones. I'm a central defender who's not very good on the ball so i didnt even get a look in.

But I got together with a few friends and we started our own 5 aside football practice. We meet every week and i have to say its more enjoyable than 11 aside.

I didnt give up on football, football gave up on me.

I am still amazing at football, but am doing athletics atm so have given it a rest. Just playing 5 aside, our team was unbeaten in the league up until a couple of weeks ago, 2 of our players dislocated bodyparts and I had to stop due to coursework. We have dropped down a bit in the league now .

Scored 9 on wednesday though

The booking/sending off reports i received still make me chuckle a bit

One of my team-mates had a 26 page report on his sending off... Dunno where the ref got the time, obviously his Sunday afternoons are quiet.

Fucck that running after a ball for ninety odd mins just to give some looper the chance to do ya damage, id rather walk after a small ball, give it a few(alot) smacks, and go to the 19th.
Admire that sort of commitment Chicken, maybe some sort of coaching so as not to lose that dressing room banter in the future.
Good luck tomorrow Spurs.

I think Lawn Bowls would be the ideal Sunday morning sport for me nowadays...

I only ever got sent of once at Sunday league football. It was for reinacting a situation similar to the Suarez vs Ghana one

I dived once and won a penalty. The aggrieved defender went to grab me by the throat, so I dived to the floor again holding my face and got him sent off.

Spent the rest of my time on the pitch trying to avoid getting a broken leg/nose/kick in the balls/spat on. Think I lasted 5 minutes before being subbed off.

we had game stopped after guy from other team chased the ref round the pitch with a shovel after being sent off

That pub got kicked out of the league.. Not a place to pop into for a quiet frienly drink

went in there once for later drink and `ordered a drink and said, 2 pints and get yourself one darling

She more or less throw the drinks at me, and said stick your drink, im not your darling

Think she must of learnt her customer service skills at tesco

We also had a player diving, then chased around a field of 6 pitches and a cricket field by 9 of the opposition players.
Ended when he got caught by the side of another game, and those two teams had to save him!

If he stayed and fought it out we could of heped him, but none of us lazy bástards could be bothered to join in the chase so he was on his own...

I captained my uni 11 a side team for a season, motivating students to get up at 9am on a Saturday to cycle 5 miles for a game in the grim outskirts of Edinburgh was always going to be a struggle.

Knocked it on the head and now we play 5-a-side. But I play 15s rugby more regularly (SH). I'm a quick, quite skillful right footed player and enjoy playing on the left wing, I just like shooting across the keeper... think it's a relic of playing too much Fifa.
