Man Utd Fans top racism arrests list

Manchester United fans top list of football-related arrests involving racism

Man Utd statement: "This statistic applies to 0.0004 per cent of our match-going fanbase. It does not reflect the views or behaviour of our fans as a whole in any way"

Manchester United supporters have been involved in more football-related arrests where racism was an aggravating factor or a feature than any other club in England in the four seasons up to 2017-18, data from the Home Office shows.

Data released under a Freedom of Information request by the Press Association shows that 27 individuals recorded as United fans by police were arrested during the seasons 2014-15 to 2017-18.

Championship clubs Leeds and Millwall each had 15 supporters arrested, while Leicester had 14 and Chelsea 13.

Other clubs with arrests in double figures are West Ham (11), with Barnsley, Manchester City, Middlesbrough and Sunderland all on 10.

Manchester United pointed to the fact their large attendances meant the percentage of their supporters involved was miniscule.

In response to the Home Office data concerning arrests, a statement from Kick It Out read: "These figures show racism is a nationwide problem shared by clubs of all different sizes in all parts of the country.

"We support them in challenging racism and other forms of discrimination, and will continue our programme of education in the game to help reduce this problem."

----------------------------------------------------------

The statistics show that total number of arrests where racism was recorded diminished year on year on year 2015-2018.

In twenty years of going to Old Trafford I only recall one time when a fan was ejected for being overtly racist (hurling N-bombs at West Ham players).

I'm not sure about the timing of this article. It seems to me that the Press Association was just fishing for a story during the off-season.

Racism is at an all-time low in the game from a fan perspective (at least in the UK), and I think we can all agree that it'll never be fully eradicated. There will always be that 0.0004% when drink and mob mentality is a factor.

Obviously these statistics post-date an entire stadium of people booing a black man who had been racially abused...

Match-going United fans, have you encountered much of a problem with racism amongst our support?

I never quite know what to make of stats like this.

Should football generally be congratulated for it's commitment to fight racism resulting very low arrest numbers?

Or does this say that racists generally aren't being arrested?

I've only been to see England play 3 times because generally speaking I hated the atmosphere; each time I witnessed racist views (let's be honest, a range of bigotry actually) and didn't see anyone being removed from the stadium and certainly no arrests.

I don't go to see matches nearly as often as I used to but my general impression is that fans police themselves better than ever before and overt racism is much, much less common. To the point I'd genuinely be surprised to hear it now and that wouldn't have been the case 20 years ago. There is still a huge amount of hate within games though and referencing a players nationality or UK region when hurling abuse still appears pretty normal.

Like I said, difficult to know how to view these stats. Generally I'd say it's positive but I find it difficult to be overly positive when there's still so much bile in football.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

How recent were those England games you went to?

There's undeniably a racist element in the England support, but more generally even amongst the non-racist England fans there's a toleration of xenophobia with the songs. Mob mentality.

Fun fact:

9 out of 10 people enjoy gang rape.

A while ago in fairness, probably a decade ago actually.

I appreciate England isn't club football, the atmosphere at club football is infinitely better (imo), I just mentioned that as an example of arrests not necessarily being the best indicator. Albeit times may have changed since my experiences.

I think the headline around Utd topping the list is ridiculous (for all the reasons already given), I'm just not sure I'd go as far as commending football off the back of these stats either. Abuse is still absolutely rife within crowds, it just seems some types of abuse are more acceptable than others.

True. I wouldn't say the level of abusive has diminished an enormous amount, but I do think people are more aware of their language.

The C-Bomb has probably replaced the N-Bomb.

Man United fans are no less or more racist than other clubs in England.

England is one of the most tolerant country in the world and a lot of people forget this.

For over 20 yers going to UTD games, and i admit, i can remember one instance, and that was during a Chelsea game, when Jimmy Floyd roasted one in a 3-0 beatdown.. apart from that, never heard a comment.
i'm sure it does happen... but a better stat would be the ratio... as shown with the amount of UTD fans, the percentage is small... Now do this for say, Millwall.
