Beating the mighty Real Madrid side after extra time.

The Dons celebrate today 40 years after winning the ECWC a massive achievement for a Scottish club

The last time Real were beaten in a European Final

Still the last time a Scottish club won a European trophy and after beating Hamburg 2-0 on Agg the only club to win two European trophies

Aberdeen FC the most successful Scottish club ever in Europe!!

By the way, there was a feature in the Guardian about it too, in case you missed it:

The new firm started in the 80s when Aberdeen and Utd were doing well

Mind Bayern Munich in the QFs as well

Aye, as a Celtic man based in Aberdeen I witnessed a serious number of pumpings by the Dons at Pittodrie in that period. Was at Uni 81-85 and went to a fair few Dons' home Euro nights around then, mainly because they were a cracking side to watch ... well that and one of my Economics lecturers was behind the introduction of the voucher scheme for getting tickets.

decent Madrid team that immediately preceded the emergence of the Quinta del Buitre side of the mid-late 80s

Cursed season that turned out to be. Reached every available final, won none, and lost the league title on the final day too.

Lost the CWC final in e.t.
Lost the King's Cup to a 90th-minute header
Lost the League Cup 4-3 on agg
Lost the Supercopa in e.t.
Lost the league title on the last day

sounds even worse than those 2 last day of the season defeats in Tenerife in 92 & 93 that cost us a couple of league titles

I was about 14-15 at the time, so the details are a bit blurred now, but I remembered Alonso's diving header in the cup final, and then I realised it was the same season I was at the Bernabéu when Maradona scored *that* goal in the first leg of League Cup final.

Remember it well, was living in Invergordon and used to deliver milk to Eric Black’s family in Alness. SAF’s greatest achievement!

Too young to remember it, but in all honesty, would love to see any could outside the old firm do something similar at some point in the future

Country needs it
