They've probably got the highest density of poor people as well which is what swings it.

The perception that poor people vote democrat is wrong. Look at the states in the bible belt and in the south, they always vote republican and they are the gun toting, bible preaching poor bunch.

Less than 8 percent of the country is on welfare, so how that 8% makes a president win an election is baffling

Those poll stats I cited had it spot on.
The Democrats equal or better the voter support of the Republicans in all but a small set of demographics.

And that set is too small in number to electorally make a difference. As they say : go figure.
