Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish says that unless Premier League clubs can find a way to stage matches soon, it may be a “very, very extended period” before the top flight returns.
Speaking on BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show, Parish said that initial plans for league matches to be staged again from June may prove unfeasible.
“We would be derelict in our duty if we didn’t find a way to try and bring the game back,” he said.
“It may prove beyond us.”

The remains of a rare 19th Century dock built for Charles Darwin's ship HMS Beagle has been recognised as a site of national importance.
The submerged mud berth on the River Roach in Rochford, Essex, will now be protected against unauthorised change.
The ship, launched in 1820, allowed Darwin to make observations that led to his theory of natural selection.
"We are glad to see this site in a quiet corner of Essex given national protection," said Historic England.
"This is a fascinating example of a rare piece of maritime history."

Comedian Jerry Stiller, best known for his recurring role as George Costanza's father on TV's Seinfeld, has died aged 92, his actor son Ben has confirmed.
"I'm sad to say that my father passed away from natural causes," Ben wrote on Twitter, calling him "a great dad and grandfather" and "dedicated husband".
Born in New York in 1927, Stiller spent many years in a comedy team with his wife Anne Meara, who died in 2015.
His other roles included Arthur Spooner in TV sitcom The King of Queens.

Siegfried and Roy were a duo of German-American magicians and entertainers, best known for their appearances with white lions and white tigers. It was composed of Siegfried Fischbacher (born June 13, 1939) and Roy Horn (born Uwe Ludwig Horn; October 3, 1944 – May 8, 2020).
From February 1, 1990, until Horn's career-ending injury on October 3, 2003, the duo formed Siegfried & Roy at the Mirage Resort and Casino, which was regarded as the most-visited show in Las Vegas, Nevada.
On April 28, 2020, Horn's publicist stated he "tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19 and is currently responding well to treatment".
However, his condition deteriorated and he died at the age of 75 on May 8, 2020, at Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas.
The duo's spokesman, Dave Kirvin, announced Horn's death and said it was due to complications from the disease. Fischbacher stated that "the world has lost one of the greats of magic, but I have lost my best friend".
No professional sport, even behind closed doors, will be staged in England until 1 June at the earliest, the UK government has announced.
The government has published a 50-page guidance document detailing how England will begin to ease lockdown measures.
Step two of that plan - which will not be allowed to start before 1 June - includes "permitting cultural and sporting events to take place behind closed doors for broadcast, while avoiding the risk of large-scale social contact".
The document states that reopening venues that attract large crowds, such as sports grounds, "may only be fully possible significantly later depending on the reduction in numbers of infections".
Premier League clubs are meeting on Monday to continue discussions on Project Restart.

In the final, she finished 23rd in a field of 25 contestants, having received 25 points.
Kavanagh is highly regarded among fans of the Eurovision Song Contest, and the OGAE Ireland (official Eurovision fan club) president, Diarmuid Furlong, said: "A lot of us would regard Niamh as one of the best vocalists who's ever won the Eurovision Song Contest". While she has enjoyed success in Europe Kavanagh remains relatively unknown in the United States. However, the singer recorded an album in that country following her initial Eurovision success.
There were disturbances before and after two international association football matches between Egypt and Algeria in November 2009, leading to diplomatic tensions between Egypt, Algeria, and Sudan. The matches were in Group C in the CAF section of the qualifying competition for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The first match, the final scheduled match in Group C, took place in Cairo on 14 November, with Egypt winning 2–0. The result left Egypt and Algeria tied for first place in Group C, necessitating a playoff match in a neutral country. This took place in Omdurman, Sudan on 18 November, with Algeria winning 1–0 and thus qualifying for the World Cup final tournament in South Africa in June 2010.

People have been warned they are not allowed to drive from England into Wales for exercise as the two countries move to different lockdown rules.
Rules have been relaxed in England, meaning people can "drive to other destinations".
In Wales, people cannot travel "a significant distance" from home.
United's two longest serving players, Steve Bruce and Brian McClair, were dropped in favour of younger players for the final. Bruce never played for United again, as he was transferred to Birmingham City 11 days later, while McClair remained at the club for a further two seasons.
Someone's gone quiet today.
We all have them.
