The 2002 French presidential election consisted of a first round election on 21 April 2002, and a runoff election between the top two candidates (Jacques Chirac and Jean-Marie Le Pen) on 5 May 2002. This presidential contest attracted a greater than usual amount of international attention because of far-right candidate Le Pen's unexpected appearance in the runoff election.

Although Le Pen's political party National Front described itself as mainstream conservative, non-partisan observers largely agreed in defining it as a far right or ultra-nationalist party. As a protest, almost all French political parties called for their supporters to vote against Le Pen, most notably the Socialists who were traditionally billed as the archrivals to Chirac's party. Chirac thus went on to win the biggest landslide in a French presidential election (greater even than that of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte in 1848, the first by direct ballot), winning over 82% of the vote.

The National Front would not appear again in the second round of the French presidential election until 2017.

"The pen is mightier than the sword" is a metonymic adage, penned by English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839, indicating that communication (particularly written language), or in some interpretations, administrative power or advocacy of an independent press, is a more effective tool than direct violence.

Joseph DeAngelo, the man known as the Golden State Killer, has admitted to 13 murders in a deal with US prosecutors meant to spare him the death penalty.

DeAngelo, who was a Californian police officer during his crimes in the 1970s and 80s, was arrested in 2018 after his DNA was found via a genealogy website.

The hearing in Sacramento took place in a large university ballroom, to allow for victims and families to attend.

He also admitted to numerous rapes, burglaries and other crimes.

DeAngelo, 74, is expected to be sentenced to life in prison in August at a second court hearing, where people hurt by his crimes will be allowed to read victim impact statements.

Byron Burger has filed a notice to appoint administrators, as it tries to protect the restaurant chain from creditors while it seeks a rescue deal.

The chain has 1,200 staff and 52 restaurants across the UK.

Sources confirmed that the Byron Burger board still remain hopeful that it can be sold as a "going concern".

The chain is believed to be in talks with three potential buyers, who could buy the firm or parts of it, in a so-called "pre-pack" administration deal.

This is where a firm sells all or some of its assets to a pre-determined buyer, and appoints administrators to do so.

If the chain does go formally into administration in the coming days, KPMG is set to deal with the process. The accountancy firm has been trying to sell Byron since early May.

Hats off once again to Sean Dyche, he and his players may not have exotic names or play like Brazil. But the man works miracles at Turf Moor, imagine if he was put in charge of underperforming powers like Arsenal and Tottenham. He wouldent put up with a plodder like Luiz marshalling his backline that's for sure.

Well said.

Hart might be on his way to the Rams.

Why is new Irish PM only a caretaker for two and half years, then giving job to the one who just left?

Why not just let the one who just left keep doing it?

It's a bit like the conservatives going into power with labour over a government term.

These parties are suppose to polar opposite since the foundation of the state so no way was one of them gonna get the high horse for a full term, hence the change over and if Micheal didn't get his go there would be

In other words, it's two fingers up to the Irish people who voted for change and just got the same with the green Prriicckkss thrown in.

I'm embarrassed

Zanzibar is not a member of FIFA and is therefore not eligible to enter the World Cup. The island is part of the nation of Tanzania, which holds FIFA recognition at the international level. Prior to the union of Zanzibar and Tanganyika in 1964, Zanzibar was a fully independent member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), but never qualified for the African Nations Cup.

Valencia has had 58 coaches in its history.

The first manager was the Czechoslovak Antonin Fivebr, who was at the club from 1923 until 1927, and in a second stint at the club from 1929 until 1931.

Of the 58 people to have managed Valencia, 32 have been Spaniards and 26 foreigners. In some cases, the Spaniards have been former Valencia players that agreed to take charge after the sacking of the regular manager that season, as were the cases of Eduardo Cubells, Pasieguito or Manolo Mestre.

The main nationalities barring Spaniards have been Argentinian (6 managers), English (4) and Yugoslav (3). The club has also had two Uruguayan managers, two Brazilians, two Dutch, two Italians, a Paraguayan, a Frenchman, a Serb, a Portuguese and a Czechoslovak. While the origin of the majority of the Spanish managers have been Valencian (9) and Basque (8).

Mercedes will run a new black livery in Formula 1 in 2020 as a signal of their commitment to greater diversity and inclusion in motorsport.

Silver had been the company's colour scheme in racing since the 1930s.

Mercedes said the Black Lives Matter movement had "shone a searching light on how much we need new measures and actions in the fight against racism".

World champion Lewis Hamilton called it an "important statement we are willing to change and improve as a business".
