The UK must "prepare for the worst" this winter rather than relying on the development of a coronavirus vaccine, a senior scientist has warned.

Sir John Bell, regius professor of medicine at Oxford University, told MPs that planning for the pandemic had relied "too heavily on assumptions" and it was better to prepare to face the colder months without banking on a breakthrough by scientists hunting for a vaccination.

The UK's blindness charity says e-scooters remain a "real and genuine threat" ahead of their legalisation.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) said that the government's safeguards, announced this week, had failed to assuage its fears.

Other witnesses at a parliamentary transport committee hearing said the top speed and weight of the e-scooters were higher than they should be.

It will become legal to ride e-scooters on Great Britain's roads from Saturday.

Richard Madeley has apologised after he was criticised for giving "dangerous" advice in a newspaper column.

He was accused of downplaying a reader's fears that their neighbour might be suffering domestic violence.

Writing in Saturday's Daily Telegraph, Madeley told the reader: "If they were going to kill each other, they'd have done it by now."

On Tuesday, the TV presenter said he was "so annoyed" with himself for having "misjudged" his response.

"My critics today are absolutely right," he wrote.

"I misjudged this one, tonally and in content. So annoyed with self."

Madeley added that he had "reached out" to various people to apologise, and that he would address the topic in his column next weekend.

Pop group McFly have signed their first record deal since 2009, and will release a new album via BMG this year.

It comes seven years after the group's last single, after which they scrapped an entire record to form a "supergroup" with fellow pop stars Busted.

Inter-band tensions later derailed an attempt to reunite as McFly in 2017.

"There was a strong possibility McFly would never happen again," singer Tom Fletcher tells the BBC. "We genuinely didn't know how to get back on track."

William Christopher Handy (November 16, 1873 – March 28, 1958) was a composer and musician who referred to himself as the Father of the Blues. Handy was one of the most influential songwriters in the United States. One of many musicians who played the distinctively American blues music, Handy did not create the blues genre but was the first to publish music in the blues form, thereby taking the blues from a regional music style (Delta blues) with a limited audience to a new level of popularity.
