Cineworld has pushed back the reopening of its UK and US cinemas to 31 July, blaming a delay in new film releases.
The world's second-largest cinema chain had previously announced cinemas in both countries would open on 10 July.
Cineworld said films including Mulan and Tenet had been delayed from July to August.
The company said cinemas would open with new safety measures in place, but some staff say the measures do not go far enough.
A petition signed by almost 1,500 people and started by Cineworld staff has called for masks to be made mandatory for customers in cinema foyers.

Folded cheese with mint is a very typical Eastern Mediterranean cheese, which has become very popular in other parts of the world. This cheese is very similar to a Mozzarella but incorporates mint leaves to give it that minty, refreshing flavour. Firm in texture, Folded cheese is stored frozen and has a six months refrigerated life. It is placed in a brine solution for long-lasting storage, making it salty and heat resistant. The brine solution needs to be washed off before the cheese is consumed with either pita or tortilla. It pairs well with ciders and fruit beers.

US Democrat Joe Biden has said he will not hold presidential campaign rallies during the coronavirus pandemic.
"This is the most unusual campaign, I think, in modern history," Mr Biden said at a press conference in Delaware.
His rival, President Donald Trump, saw lower-than-expected turnout for a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in June and his campaign has announced no new rallies.
Opinion polls show Mr Biden with an almost double-digit lead over Mr Trump as the 3 November election looms.
On Tuesday, Mr Biden told reporters: "I'm going to follow the doc's orders - not just for me but for the country - and that means that I am not going to be holding rallies.
"I won't be holding rallies."
The former US vice-president under Barack Obama also said he has not yet been tested for Covid-19, which has killed almost 130,000 people in the US.

The Premier League has offered English women's football £1m to help enable the 2020-21 season to start, chief executive Richard Masters has told MPs.
That investment would help cover coronavirus testing costs at the top end of the game.
Masters also told the Department of Culture, Media and Sport select committee he would like the Premier League to take over the running of the Women's Super League.
But he said "now isn't the right time".
