The World Cup is set to start one day earlier than planned on Sunday, 20 November with hosts Qatar taking on Ecuador.

The Group A opener was due to be played on 21 November at 16:00 GMT, as the third match of the competition.

The opening match of the tournament was to be Senegal against the Netherlands at 10:00, earlier on the Monday.

However, the administrative arm of world governing body Fifa has submitted a proposal to move the Qatar game.

It followed discussions with Qatar and their opponents Ecuador, after receiving a request from the South American confederation Conmebol.

It fits in with the tradition of either the hosts or the holders being involved in the opening match.

The final decision will be made by the bureau of the Fifa council, which comprises the six confederation presidents, plus Fifa president Gianni Infantino.

A decision on whether to go ahead with a new coal mine in Cumbria has been delayed for a second time.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities said it would now be made "on or before 8 November".

The Planning Inspectorate's report has been with the government since April and a decision was due in August.

If allowed it would be the first deep coal mine to open in the UK for more than 30 years.

The department said officials were "not yet in a position to complete their consideration before providing advice to ministers".

It added: "This is a quasi-judicial decision so it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage."

The proposed mine at Whitehaven would remove coking coal from beneath the Irish Sea for the production of steel in the UK and Europe.

The coal would not be used for power generation.

The shortlist of UK cities that could host next year's Eurovision Song Contest has been revealed, with seven locations in the running.

Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield will vie to stage the event in May.

Twenty cities expressed an interest, the BBC said, and those not making the shortlist include London and Belfast.

The UK was chosen to host the contest after organisers decided it could not be staged by Ukraine, the 2022 winners.

UK singer Sam Ryder finished second at this year's contest in Turin, Italy.

A walrus that has become a popular attraction in the Oslo Fjord is being endangered by too much attention and could even be put down for her own good, authorities say.

The walrus, nicknamed Freya, rose to fame after clambering on to boats to sunbathe - sometimes sinking them.

But the Norwegian fisheries ministry says people are getting too close, putting her and themselves at risk.

It is considering measures, including euthanasia, if crowds persist.

Despite repeated warnings, people continue to gather close to the 1,300lb (600kg) walrus, the fisheries ministry said.

Its statement included a photograph of a large group of people, including children, standing within touching distance of the animal.

The UK economy shrank between April and June as experts forecast a gloomy outlook with recession on the horizon.

The economy contracted by 0.1% in the second quarter of the year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

This was partly due to Covid schemes like Test and Trace ending, retail sales falling and the Queen's Platinum Jubilee bank holiday in June, it said.

The Bank of England has forecast the UK will fall into recession towards the end of the year as energy costs soar.

Despite shrinking between April and June, the UK economy avoided recession because gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.8% in the first three months of this year.

Edinburgh Zoo has announced that its oldest penguin has died after being attacked by a fox.

The 35-year-old penguin, known as Mrs Wolowitz, was killed after the fox broke into her enclosure on Wednesday night.

The Northern Rockhopper, which was popular with visitors, hatched in 1987 and lived to double her life expectancy.

The zoo said no other penguins at the enclosure were harmed in the attack.

Darren McGarry, head of living collections at Edinburgh Zoo, said: "We were saddened to discover a fox had broken into our penguin enclosure through the night and attacked Mrs Wolowitz, our oldest penguin.

"She was a big personality and a favourite among keepers and visitors, who will miss her.

"Thankfully, the rest of our colony were unharmed and are doing well."

England's health chiefs say they will create an extra 7,000 beds to tackle "substantial" pressures this winter.

It comes after government scientific advisers warned that "high numbers of beds may be needed for respiratory patients".

The extra beds will include more temporary units at hospital sites and 2,500 "virtual ward spaces" with patients monitored at home.

The NHS is already facing intense pressure.

According to official figures for July, nearly 30,000 patients waited more than 12 hours to be admitted to hospital.

July also saw the highest number of ambulance callouts for life-threatening conditions since records began, and only 40% of patients were able to leave hospital when ready to do so.

NHS chiefs say this could be the first winter where there is likely to be combined pressures from Covid and flu.

There are around 91,000 adult beds in general wards in England.

A rewilding community that created its own nature reserve after completing one of Scotland’s largest ever land buyouts has done it again.

Under the aegis of the Langholm Initiative charity, the community raised £3.8m via crowdfunding to buy 5,200 acres from the Duke of Buccleuch last year. This week, it built on that success, raising £2.2m to buy 5,300 more acres.

This will double the size of the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve, which was created to tackle the nature and climate crises, while boosting community regeneration through rewilding.

Nottingham Forest have agreed a £20m deal with Watford for striker Emmanuel Dennis.

Forest have been on a massive recruitment drive following promotion to the Premier League.

They are still keen to improve Steve Cooper's squad to ensure the club does not return straight back to the Championship.

The Nigerian scored 10 league goals in 35 appearances for Watford last season.

But he only scored two in his final 17 games as the Hornets were relegated.

He has started both of Watford's games so far this term but is yet to find the net.

Forest have also been linked with Atalanta midfielder Remo Freuler and former Crystal Palace midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate.
