British number one Emma Raducanu put a dampener on Serena Williams' farewell tour after thrashing the American great in the Cincinnati Open first round.

Williams, 40, plans to retire after the US Open, which starts on 29 August, and lost 6-4 6-0 in what is set to be the penultimate event of her career.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion lacked sharpness and her 19-year-old opponent punished her in a composed display.

Reigning US Open champion Raducanu will play Victoria Azarenka in round two.

"I'm so grateful for the experience to have been able to play Serena and for our careers to have crossed over," said world number 13 Raducanu, who played superbly with her defence of the Grand Slam title in New York looming.

"Everything she has achieved has been so inspirational and it was a true honour to share the court with her."

Defender Abdou Diallo says Senegal are aiming to do better than any other African nation by reaching the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar.

No side from the continent has made it past the quarter-finals, with Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002) and most recently Ghana (2010) knocked out in the last eight - all after extra time or penalties.

Diallo says the African champions, who exited the 2018 tournament in the group stage, want to "break a glass ceiling" when they embark on their third World Cup finals.

"Even though we can't see the future, you have to be convinced that you definitely can achieve it," the 26-year-old Paris St-Germain centre-back told BBC Sport Africa.

"We also had a glass ceiling in the Nations Cup final and we broke it, so my dream is to break another one. If we manage to do that, I will be the happiest.

"There are no complexes. If we don't make it, we don't make it, but you have to accept that pressure because it means that we are doing a good job."

Senegal begin their Group A campaign against three-time runners-up the Netherlands on 21 November before they play hosts Qatar on 25 November and finally Ecuador four days later.

Hundreds of bees have died after beehives were pelted with fruit and deliberately pushed over at an orchard, a community group has said.

The hives were damaged at New Mills Community Orchard, in High Lea Park, Derbyshire, between 6 and 9 August.

New Mills Community Orchard Friends Group said beekeepers found two of the six hives in "complete disarray" with equipment thrown to the ground.

The group said the damage had left the community "shocked and devastated".

It is thought the hives were pelted with fruit torn from trees in the orchard and it is unknown whether the queen was killed.

The group said without the queen, the colony would not be able to survive.
