Manchester United produced an outstanding display to defeat Liverpool and give manager Erik ten Hag his first Premier League victory at a thunderous Old Trafford.

Ten Hag took the bold decision to drop captain Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo and was rewarded with a performance that lifted the mood of crisis around Manchester United and leave Liverpool still searching for a first win of the season.

Jadon Sancho showed superb control and composure to deservedly put United in front after 16 minutes before Marcus Rashford raced clear to beat Alisson from substitute Anthony Martial's pass eight minutes after the interval.

Mo Salah set up a tense finish when he scrambled in a header with nine minutes left but United survived to give Ten Hag just the sort of triumph he needs to make his mark at Old Trafford.

Laura Whitmore has announced she is stepping down as host of Love Island.

The 37-year-old has fronted the ITV2 dating programme and its spin-off series Aftersun since 2020, following the death of former host Caroline Flack.

Writing on Instagram, Whitmore said flying to South Africa for the latest series had been "very difficult" and also cited "conflicting projects".

She has hosted the last three series of Love Island, which started in 2015.

Whitmore said: "There are certain elements of the show I've found very difficult that cannot be changed some due to the format, including the flying back and forth to South Africa along with my new conflicting projects.

"I wish it was still possible but know you'll be in safe hands. I was only planning to fill in for Caroline for a series and it turned into 3 series. I hope I did you proud Caroline."

The announcement came after Whitmore revealed last month that she had left her Sunday morning show on BBC Radio 5 Live, to be replaced by Helen Skelton.

The annual fireworks display which traditionally signals the end of the Edinburgh International Festival will not take place this year.

The 45-minute show from Edinburgh Castle, which began in 1982, usually attracts more than 250,000 spectators.

The display did not take place in 2020 or 2021 due to Covid restrictions.

Organisers said the pandemic had also led to the cancellation of the fireworks this year, which is the 75th anniversary of the festival.

A spokeswoman for the Edinburgh International Festival said: "We won't be staging the fireworks this year due to planning times coming out of the pandemic.

"However, we will still have a large-scale free event in Princes Street Gardens."

A live performance by the Philadelphia Orchestra in the Edinburgh Playhouse will be streamed to the Ross Bandstand on Saturday 27 August.

A fan who Nick Kyrgios said was "drunk out of her mind" during the Wimbledon final is taking legal action against the Australian tennis player.

Kyrgios, who lost the final to Novak Djokovic in July, said the woman looked "like she has had about 700 drinks" as he complained to the umpire about her.

Anna Palus has now instructed solicitors to bring defamation proceedings against Kyrgios.

She accuses Kyrgios of a "reckless and entirely baseless allegation".

"Not only did this cause considerable harm on the day, resulting in my temporary removal from the arena, but Mr Kyrgios' false allegation was broadcast to and read by millions around the world, causing me and my family very substantial damage and distress," Palus said in a statement from solicitors Brett Wilson LLP.

Sheffield deserves better, but it’s falling further and further behind Leeds and seems low on the lists for further investment. I’d much rather go into Leeds.

Hilary Duff, on the other hand, was happy to learn that her affinity for cheese was passed down to her son, Luca. After calling the substance “the key to a happy life” and revealing she “can’t say no to it,” the “So Yesterday” songstress told Shape in 2015: “There’s a cheese shop in Beverly Hills and my car is like a magnet to it. Luca is crazy about it too.”

crocodile (n.)
large amphibious reptile, reptile of the order Crocodilia, 1560s, a respelling (to conform to Latin and French) of Middle English cokedrille, cocodril, kokedrille, etc. (c. 1300), from Old French cocodrille (13c.) and Medieval Latin cocodrillus, from classical Latin crocodilus, from Greek krokodilos, a word of unknown origin. According to Herodotus, it was an Ionic name for a kind of lizard, transferred to the crocodile. Beekes writes that "Frisk's etymology as a compound from [krokē] 'gravel' and [drilos] 'worm' (with dissimilation) should be forgotten."

The name later was extended to related species in India, the Americas, etc. The crocodile tears story, figurative of false or simulated grief, was in English from at least c. 1400. Related: Crocodilian; crocodiline.
