His on-screen son was Barry Evans, played by Shaun Williamson, who was pushed off a cliff in a dramatic episode.
Caunter's other acting roles included Pennies From Heaven, Tumbledown, and TV series Juliet Bravo.
He also appeared in the TV drama series Boon, alongside EastEnders' star Michael Elphick.

England confirmed their qualification for next summer's World Cup by overwhelming Latvia in Riga.
Thomas Tuchel's side needed victory to assure their place in the showpiece, the outcome never in doubt as England outclassed a Latvian side ranked 137th in the world.
Amid the celebrations, it was at times an uncomfortable night for Tuchel, who felt anger and frustration from England's travelling fans as they chanted sarcastically, and loudly, in response to the head coach's criticism of "silent" supporters after the friendly against Wales at Wembley.
The bigger picture, however, reveals that England qualified with two games to spare after a flawless first campaign for Tuchel, who succeeded Sir Gareth Southgate in January.
Anthony Gordon put England ahead after 26 minutes with a low, curling finish and captain Harry Kane scored twice more before the interval, first with a strike from the edge of the area then from the spot after his shirt was pulled.
England added a fourth just before the hour when Latvia's Andrejs Ciganiks bundled Djed Spence's cross into his own net.
Substitute Eberechi Eze further emphasised England's dominance with a dribble and low finish to make it 5-0 after 86 minutes.

Tuchel's England tenure started off as something of a slow burner, but sparked into life with the outstanding 5-0 win in Serbia.
England found a momentum and fluency in Belgrade that had previously eluded them under Tuchel. They now look a serious threat, led by their remarkable captain Kane, who took his tally to 76 goals in 110 appearances with his double in Riga.
And to underscore their growing menace, England have now scored 13 goals without reply in their past three games.
Tuchel may not have been presented with the most testing qualifying group when taking over from Southgate after Lee Carsley' interim period in charge, but six wins from six games without a goal conceded is still an impressive return.
England keeper Jordan Pickford made two routine saves in the second half, extending his sequence of international clean sheets to nine in a row.
It also means Tuchel can use qualifiers that are now effectively dead rubbers against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania to continuing shaping his squad in readiness for the World Cup.
Tuchel has completed phase one of the task he was given by reaching the World Cup - now he must find a way to win it.

"Goodbye" is a song recorded by British girl group Spice Girls. It was written by the group, Richard Stannard, and Matt Rowe, while it was produced by the latter two. The song became the group's first song without the vocals of Geri Halliwell. It was released by Virgin Records on 24 November 1998 and was later included on their third studio album Forever (2000). "Goodbye" is a pop ballad that lyrically consists of the group's farewell to a friend, specifically Halliwell. The lyrics were also seen, by the media and fans alike, as the group's end, although the idea was dismissed by the members.

"Goodbye" received positive reviews from music commentators, who said it was one of the group's best singles. The song was a commercial success, peaking atop the UK Singles Chart and making the Spice Girls the first act to have had three consecutive Christmas number-one singles since the Beatles in 1965. Internationally, it was also commercially successful, reaching the top spots in Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and Italy and peaking inside the top five on the charts in Australia, Denmark, El Salvador, Finland, Hungary, Malaysia, Netherlands, Sweden and Taiwan. Additionally, "Goodbye" peaked at number 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Sheffield Wednesday will "imminently" be served with a winding-up petition over money owed to HMRC.
After an investigation conducted by BBC Radio Sheffield alongside the Sheffield Star, it is understood the Championship club owes £1m.
A winding-up petition would increase the pressure on the club's owner Dejphon Chansiri to sell.
They are already under five separate EFL embargoes after failing to pay wages on time in five of the past seven months.
The BBC has contacted Sheffield Wednesday for comment.
Wednesday are second bottom of the Championship with six points from nine games after a torrid period off the field, which has left them with a threadbare squad.
The severity of the situation became apparent when May's wages were not paid on time, in the wake of the same thing happening in March.
With uncertainty ongoing and the club placed under various registration embargoes, highly-rated manager Danny Rohl departed in July and his assistant Henrik Pedersen took charge 10 days before the season started.
The team did not play a single pre-season friendly in front of fans and players pulled out of a training match against Burnley after July's wages were not paid.
Fans have organised protests before and during games so far this season and they boycotted the home EFL Cup ties with Leeds and Grimsby, while the supporters' trust also encouraged fans not to buy drinks or snacks in the stadium.
Thai businessman Chansiri, who has owned the club for the past 10 years, has been absent for the entire period and, as yet, no sale has been close.

A charity that breeds and trains guide dogs has welcomed its largest litter for three years - 13 puppies affectionately known as "the baker's dozen".
The 13 new additions to Guide Dogs HQ in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, have been given bakery-themed names, inspired by sweet and savoury treats.
The boys are Biscuit, Crumble, Bagel, Crumpet, Rye, Tiger and Pretzel, and the girls are Apple, Eccles, Cocoa, Chelsea, Custard and Ginger.
Janine Dixon, breeding and welfare operations lead at Guide Dogs said counting puppies during pregnancy was tricky so staff did not know mum Yori "had quite so many buns in the oven".
The cost of breeding, raising and training each guide dog can go up to £77,000, according to the charity, meaning the baker's dozen could cost just over £1m.

Leamington Spa has been a national base for the Guide Dogs charity since the 1940s and is now home to the largest breeding programme for assistance dogs in the world.

The 13 puppies will now be allocated to puppy raisers around the UK to help turn them into life-changing guide dogs by 2027.

Rangers are close to agreeing a deal to secure Kevin Muscat as their new head coach with personal terms and details still to be finalised.
The 52-year-old former Ibrox defender is currently in charge of Chinese league leaders Shanghai Port, who have four games left in their season.
One of the key issues holding up an announcement is Shanghai's match against Quingdao Hainiu, which takes place at 11:00 BST on Friday.
It is understood Rangers and Muscat are sensitive about upsetting plans for that match by formally agreeing a deal between both clubs before kick-off.

Muscat emerged as favourite for the job after former manager Steven Gerrard withdrew his candidature at the weekend saying the timing was not right for him to return to Ibrox.
Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl was also under consideration, but the German also pulled out the race on Wednesday.
Crawley-born Muscat, who spent a season as a Rangers player, started his coaching career with Melbourne Victory, with whom he won the A-League title.
After a less successful spell with Sint-Truiden in Belgium, he led Yokohama F Marinos to the J-League title before taking charge of Shanghai in 2023, won the title last season and is four games away from retaining it this term.
Rangers were left seeking a new head coach after sacking former Southampton boss Russell Martin just 17 games into the ex-Ibrox defender's reign.
The Glasgow side head into Saturday's game against United sitting eighth in the Scottish Premiership, nine points behind city rivals and reigning champions Celtic - and two more adrift of leaders Heart of Midlothian.
They also failed to qualify for the Champions League and have lost both their Europa League games so far.

Oleksandr Usyk says he will continue to fight for two more years and plans to return to the ring in 2026, but has ruled out a bout with British heavyweight Moses Itauma.
Usyk, 38, stopped Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in July to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion.
The Ukrainian, who also previously held all four recognised world titles at cruiserweight, had previously hinted that he would fight only once more before retiring.
However, the pound-for-pound star appears to have reversed that decision.
"I'll fight until I'm 41," Usyk told the Ready to Fight website. "Then I'll build a sports academy - I'll train there and train others."
Usyk said he is back in training after being sidelined by a back injury which forced the postponement of a fight with WBO mandatory challenger Joseph Parker.
He added that, "God willing", he will return next year but dismissed 20-year-old Chatham fighter Itauma as a potential opponent.
"No, I won't fight Itauma," Usyk said. "He's young - always teasing me. And he said himself he doesn't hit grandpas.
"I can't say who exactly [I'll fight next] because negotiations are ongoing. I'd be lying if I gave you a name."

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca says Cole Palmer will be out for six more weeks as he continues his recovery from a persistent groin injury.
The 23-year-old forward hasn't played a competitive match since 20 September, when he was forced off by the recurrence of an issue that first emerged during the Blues' shortened pre-season following their successful Club World Cup campaign.
Palmer has made just three Premier League appearances this season and is running short of opportunities to impress England manager Thomas Tuchel before next summer's World Cup.
Chelsea decided to rest Palmer before the international break to give him the best chance of being fit and ready by November - but Maresca has pushed his potential return back to the end of next month.
"I was wrong," Maresca told a news conference on Friday. "Unfortunately, he needs to be out probably six more weeks. So, yes, this is the update."

Former West Ham manager Graham Potter is in talks to become Sweden's next head coach.
The 50-year-old expressed his love for the country and interest in the post earlier this week and BBC Sport understands discussions over Potter taking the role are moving quickly.
Sweden sacked Jon Dahl Tomasson on Tuesday following a poor start to the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign that has left them sitting bottom of Group B with just one point from four games.
Potter, who was dismissed by the Hammers in September after only eight months at the helm, previously enjoyed a successful spell in Sweden as boss of Ostersunds FK from 2011 until 2018.
The Englishman led them from the fourth tier of Swedish football to its top division, and also helped them win the Swedish Cup in 2017.
Potter then managed Swansea City and Brighton before joining Chelsea in 2022, but was sacked from his role at Stamford Bridge after seven months.
Former Denmark striker and Blackburn Rovers boss Tomasson was fired from his Sweden post after a 1-0 defeat at home to Kosovo in Monday's World Cup qualifier.
Despite a stellar forward line of Liverpool's Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres of Arsenal, the Swedes drew with Slovenia and lost to both Switzerland and Kosovo in their opening three group games.
But, having won their Uefa Nations League group, they are still on course for a play-off spot to give them another chance of reaching next summer's World Cup in North America.

Leandro Trossard's second-half goal was enough for Arsenal to overcome a stubborn Fulham and move three points clear at the top of the Premier League.
Mikel Arteta came into the match without captain Martin Odegaard and named Eberechi Eze in his place as the manager looked to make the most of the attacking talent at his disposal.
However, it was the home side who started brightest and Fulham went close through Harry Wilson and Josh King, who had an effort tipped over the bar by David Raya.
Arsenal grew into the game and Riccardo Calafiori had an excellently worked goal ruled out for offside.
The Gunners started the second half with more intensity and pinned Fulham back for large parts.
That pressure told in the 58th minute when centre-back Gabriel flicked on a Bukayo Saka corner and Trossard was well positioned to fire home from close range at the back post.
Saka thought he had won a penalty to give Arsenal the chance to double their lead, but the decision was overturned by the video assistant referee (VAR).
The victory means Arsenal move three points clear of second-placed Manchester City - who were top for a couple of hours on Saturday after beating Everton - with Liverpool four behind in third. Arne Slot's side host Manchester United on Sunday (16:30 BST).
