In the early hours of 31 August 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, died from the injuries she sustained in a car crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris, France. Dodi Fayed, Diana's partner, and Henri Paul, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz W140 S-Class, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, was severely injured, but survived the crash.

Some media claimed the erratic behaviour of the paparazzi following the car, as reported by the BBC, had contributed to the crash. In 1999, a French investigation found that Paul, who lost control of the vehicle at high speed while intoxicated by alcohol and under the effects of prescription drugs, was solely responsible for the crash. He was the deputy head of security at the Hôtel Ritz and had earlier goaded paparazzi waiting for Diana and Fayed outside the hotel. Anti-depressants and traces of an anti-psychotic in his blood may have worsened Paul's inebriation. In 2008, the jury at a British inquest returned a verdict of unlawful killing through grossly negligent driving by Paul and the following paparazzi vehicles. Some media reports claimed Rees-Jones survived because he was wearing a seat belt, but other investigations revealed that none of the occupants of the car were wearing them.

Darren Hayes has lifted the lid on Savage Garden's acrimonious breakup as he prepares to release his first album in over a decade.

Savage Garden, comprising Darren and guitarist Daniel Jones, formed in 1993 and produced a slew of No. 1 hits like To the Moon and Back and Truly Madly Deeply.

Sadly, a rift between the bandmates caused them to part ways at the height of their fame in 2001.

Appearing on Thursday's Kyle And Jackie O Show, Darren, 50, clarified that the real reason Savage Garden split was because Daniel decided to leave.

The singer explained this when he pulled up host Kyle Sandilands for casually saying that he was the one who quit Savage Garden.

'Well hang on, let me clarify that – Daniel left Savage Garden,' he interjected, adding: 'I loved it, I would have been in that band forever.'

When asked whether he and Daniel were friendly while in the band, Darren bluntly replied: 'Uh, no. I was really supportive of him [but] he absolutely hated the experience of being famous.'

'He decided before the release of that second album that he didn't want that life – which is totally his right,' he added.

Broadcaster Bill Turnbull has died at the age of 66, his representatives have confirmed.

Turnbull hosted BBC Breakfast for 15 years, in both London and later Salford, and also fronted Songs of Praise and game show Think Tank.

His family said: "Bill will be remembered by many as a remarkable broadcaster who brought warmth and humour into people's homes".

In 2018, he announced he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

After leaving the BBC in 2016, he joined Classic FM, and continued presenting shows on the network until recently.

His family added: "Following a challenging and committed fight against prostate cancer, Bill passed away peacefully at his home in Suffolk surrounded by his family on Wednesday, 31 August."

They said he received his diagnosis in 2017, and praised his "outstanding medical care" from the Royal Marsden and Ipswich Hospitals, St Elizabeth Hospice and his GP.

"He was resolutely positive and was hugely buoyed by the support he received from friends, colleagues and messages from people wishing him luck. It was a great comfort to Bill that so many more men are now testing earlier for this disease," they said.

"Bill was a wonderful husband and father to his three children; his family and friends will miss how he always made them laugh, and the generosity and love he shared with those around him," they said, adding he was a devoted Wycombe Wanderers fan and "an ever-aspiring beekeeper".

Turnbull was a favourite with viewers on BBC Breakfast thanks to his gentle presenting style, which was well suited to early morning broadcasting.

During his time on BBC Breakfast, he presented alongside Sian Williams, Susanna Reid, Kate Silverton, Natasha Kaplinsky and Louise Minchin.

His former colleagues Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt, who were presenting Thursday's show, paid an emotional tribute just after the news was announced.

Prior to working on Breakfast, Turnbull also worked as a reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC News 24, as the news channel was then known.

He appeared as a contestant on an early series of Strictly Come Dancing, finishing in sixth place with his partner Karen Hardy.

In recent years, Turnbull guest presented episodes of The One Show and reunited with Reid for several editions of ITV's Good Morning Britain.

After his cancer diagnosis was made public, he fronted a documentary for Channel 4 called Bill Turnbull: Staying Alive, in which he explored the use of cannabis oil for medicinal purposes.

Prostate Cancer UK said that after Turnbull announced he had the illness in March 2018, their specialist nurses experienced their "busiest day on record" and they saw a huge rise in web traffic of men looking for information and support.

In November 2017, Turnbull took part in a celebrity edition of The Great British Bake Off - which was in aid of a charity, Stand Up to Cancer. He found out about his prostate cancer during filming.

He said inspiring men to get tested for the illness by publicly revealing his own diagnosis was the "one useful thing" he had done in his life, admitting he was "cross with myself" for the pride he had felt at not visiting a GP in four years.

Martina Hingis defeated Venus Williams in the final, 6–0, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1997 US Open. By reaching the final, Hingis became the seventh woman, (after Maureen Connolly, Margaret Court, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, and Monica Seles) to reach all four major singles finals in a calendar year. She also became the youngest woman to reach each major final, and the youngest woman to win three majors in a calendar year. She did not drop a set during the tournament. Williams was the first unseeded player in the Open Era to reach the final.

Steffi Graf was the two-time defending champion, but withdrew due to injury.

Teaming up for the first time since 2018, and probably the last time, they lost 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 to Czechs Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova.

Together, the American greats have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles.

Serena Williams, 40, is due to retire after the tournament, while the future plans of elder sister Venus, at 42, remain unknown.

Serena plays Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the women's singles on Friday, but Venus was knocked out in the first round.

Nut-based cheese that's so good, it may "cashew" off guard! Nuts For Cheese's line of artisan, handcrafted, and vegan cheeses made from cultured, organic cashews is out of this world yummy. Brighton have agreed an initial £7.5m fee that could rise to £10m to sign Billy Gilmour from Chelsea.

The Scotland midfielder, 21, spent last season on loan at Norwich City and has not featured for the Blues this season.

The former Rangers youth player was an unused substitute for Chelsea in both the FA Cup and Champions League finals in 2021.

Gilmour is the second Chelsea player to join Brighton this summer, after Levi Colwill signed on loan in August.

In June, Gilmour extended his Chelsea contract to 2024 but leaves Stamford Bridge having made 21 appearances for the club.

Gilmour, who has won 15 caps for Scotland and was their stand-out player against England in the European Championships last year, impressed early in his Chelsea career.

However, he slipped down the pecking order under manager Thomas Tuchel and endured a difficult time on loan at relegated Norwich last term.

Meanhwile striker Florin Andone, who scored six goals in 30 appearances after joining Brighton in 2018, has had his contract terminated by mutual consent.

Reading winger Lauren Wade has been ruled out of Northern Ireland's World Cup qualifier in Luxembourg on Friday.

Wade rolled her ankle in training on Wednesday but manager Kenny Shiels is hopeful the 28-year-old will be fit for Tuesday's final qualifier in Latvia.

Kirsty McGuinness is returning from injury and Shiels says it will be a "toss of a coin" if the Cliftonville winger is available.

Northern Ireland cannot qualify for the World Cup next summer.

Their final two qualifiers are the country's first matches since Euro 2022, which was NI's maiden major tournament.
