Drives me insane that Kag. There's a bloke opposite us that has England flags all over the side of his house. Looks so chavvy.
To make it worse, he's one of them s that puts up a crap load of tacky xmas lights as well, without taking the England flags down

One is fine Macca, I do that. But I mean this guy had like, one in every window, his garage is painted white & red cross, flag on the roof, everything. He did this year, don't think he did last year. Proper lazy chavvy
Chicken I just bloody got that you
Hippo, nobody is saying patriotism play a role in wars, they're saying there are far more important things such as money, greed, power and religion.

You can't have a war without patriotism. Without patriotism most people would realise just how stupid war is.

Yes it does, but far less so. Like Analog just said, it's usually used as propaganda to make idiots think we need to start wars.
Religion, now that's something I despise with a passion but I also understand many people in the world need it and I would never tell them they are wrong to believe in it as long as it doesn't harm others.
"give some examples and show how loving one's country has created these cultures instead of the driving forces of every day life."
Eh? How does it not? Patriotism should mean a cultural attachment to a homeland, it is why cultures continue to exist - a pride in that way of living. Why are you focussing on the negative connotation of it? It's the great thing with world cups, seeing all these different cultures together and that atmosphere it creates.

Personally I would love it if the whole cul de sac that I live on decorated their houses during WC's etc
A sense of community that show we care about where we live
For me, it isn't a political statement whatsoever as far as I'm concerned. It's more about a cummunity coming together and enjoying an occassion as one.
2012 was a bloody good year to be British when it comes to Sport
Macca
I can understand why people do it when there is a tournament or something similar going on. I tend to get behind most Englishmen/Brits unless I take a particular liking to a certain sportsman, so in a sporting sense I get patriotic.
But all year round? I think it looks silly, as I don't see the point in telling the world, or your estate, the country you're from. Most people I come across with this sort of patriotism do tend to be a bit racist. Not that I'm saying anybody here is, of course.

I would be more interested if I thought we had a decent team and a chance of winning the world cup, unfortunately it will be the same old rubbish from the same old players should we qualify.
And with the prospect of the likes of Jordan Horrenderson and Jonjo Shelvey seen as the future of England, it is hard to feel enthusiastic.

Not strictly true, but I see your point. There are a lot of religious wars. I agree with MU82, for me it is the same with things like vegetarianism, and stuff like that. Don't mind what you believe, I'll even support you if you're a friend/family and those are your beliefs, the only thing I completely object to is people using things like that to take some kind of moral high ground and shove it down your throat.
Also Chicken, I've spent the best part of the last hour trying to figure out if any Asian teams had the nickname massive hole, or similar.

Yes, but religion and patriotism quite often overlap.
Get rid of religion and get rid of 80% of wars!!
I can't think of a single war thats been caused by patriotism!
I can think of a few that have tried to hijack patriotism to fuel the public into supporting a war, most recently the Argentine Junta in 82 gain support for the war!
That's not actually true though. Unless you can give an example where patriotism is the sole reason for a war then having patriotism or not makes that redunant.
You could also argue there would be more war due to the lack of national identity causing civil war.

It's difficult to be patriotic in the UK as it's multi-national. When I goto Georgia for example there are a lot of patriots who feel their food, language, alphabet and wine is the best. It's theirs and nobody has anything like it.
"everyone loved their country. you wouldn't say for example italy has great architecture (a part of their culture) because they all love their country so much"
No, but you would say that italians are allowed to love their country because it has great architecture though, and if they didn't love that architecture and the culture around it, then it would have ceased to exist, wouldn't it?
Hippo, Italy has great architecture because the renaissance artists wanted to go back to their heritage. So yes, they do have nice architecture because they were patriotic.
Like has been said, people focus far too much on the negatives.
