Ilori's football opinions, without the ability to get away from them.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/tottenham-hotspur/10970676/Liverpool-and-Tottenham-battle-to-sign-Swansea-City-defender-Ben-Davies-as-Spurs-agree-10-million-fee.html
Various sources suggesting Spurs have agreed the £10m fee and we will decide whether to match it not.
Suggestions that Davies wants to talk to us if we do.
Seems like a no brainer to me, for us, and for him.
I watched a lot of Swansea last season. He's decent.
Not sure for LB. Maybe. He's solid TOOR, probably more solid than all the other LB's we've been linked with. Going forward he's pretty limited but he can pass, he's composed and he's a good decision maker. He's not the quickest but he's pretty tall for a LB.
I think he's probably a bit better than most will think on here and £10m is not far wrong. If he can form part of a good defence, and he is a team player, then it's a signing that will improve us.
He is apparently poor on one v one defending (had more dribbles past him than anyone last season).
At 21 that can be developed and improved pretty easily.
I have liked what I have seen when I have watched him. He is an athlete and is technically sound.
I don't think we need our full backs to be Cafu going forwards, we have plenty of good dribblers and chance makers in the team.
What we need them to be good at is positionally, passing, and getting up and down so they are available.
I disagree. I think it's essential in the systems BR plays for our full backs to be getting forward.
That's why I'm surprised at this link.

Who said I didn't want them to get forward?
Within hours of the Moreno deal 'collapsing' we apparently bid for Davies, maybe we're trying to get Sevilla to accept a lower offer by threatening to sign another LB, I do think we're interested in Davies though and might have been forced to bid as it was looking likely he would move to Spurs.

There's a stat comparison to Shaw (You can add other players etc if you want)
They come out quite even and for £10m-12m would be a decent deal.
I don't know TOOR. It's a position that we need and when Taylor got injured Davies did very well coming in. Brendan will know him well and we bid £8m for a 21 year old with prem experience. That all makes sense to me.
If the Moreno deal has gone cold I truly hope we're looking for more value whilst allowing us to make a huge bid for a ridiculous player. That would make me happy.
Anyone got any idea what Markovic is like in terms of the defensive side of his game?
One thing that impressed me with Coutinho last season, above everything else, was his tracking back and tackling. Likewise Sterling.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What I've heard is he has a great work ethic but from watching him that the work he does is chasing over-hit passes to stop them going out rather than defensive duties, but Rodgers has improved Coutinho/Sterling in a defensive way so should do the same with Marko.
