He never got beat by Mercer
=====================================
Did you actually watch the fight or are you one of these newbie boxing fans that think you know boxing by googling matches and checking the record books?
Lewis lost, it was a scandalous decision. It is quite clear that an overweight, average fighter like Mercer caused Lewis all sorts of problems and that is the reason why I feel he is not the best heavyweight ever. Coupled with the fact that he got knocked silly by one punch from 2 other average fighters like McCall and Rahman. In the 2nd fight with McCall he didn't even do anything, McCall just cried his way to a loss. Lewis was poor that night.
He struggled past Bruno and Tucker too, you have elevated Lewis to a ridiculous status by simply googling his record without watching his fights.

Firstly, this has nothing to do with Tyson, I have never considered Tyson as the best havyweight ever, all I said was beating Tyson in 2002 meant nothing as Tyson was finished.
Ali struggled in some fights, but Lewis struggled against Tucker, Bruno, Mercer, McCall, Rahman and was getting beat by Klitchko and when the re-match was due, he conveniently retired.
He beat Tyson in 2002 around the time he also lost to Danny Williams and Holyfield after he struggled past Vaughan Bean.

I wonder why Bowe put his heavyweight title in the bin rather than fight Lewis

Hahaha...how old was Tucker when he fought Lewis?
Also, Tyson did a better job on Bruno (twice), like that means a damn thing.
What was that about triangle theories?

Having your finger in your ears and bigging up your boy is a classic sign of a fanboy.
Educate yourself and watch fights rather than google statistics like a 5 year old.
Henry Carpenter smashed Ali, with only the bell saving him, only to be stopped on cuts. Henry was about 13 stone
Klitschko > Carpenter.
Please stick to the topic at hand
Lennox 1993 - Struggled past Tucker and Bruno
Lennox 1994 - Got knocked out by one punch from Oliver McCall inside 2 bloody rounds
Lennox 1995 - Beat Tommy Morrison (I think he even struggled in the early rounds there)
Lennox 1996 - Had all sorts of trouble against Mercer and lost the fight, but got the decision
Lennox 1996 - Beat Oliver McCall, but was too scared to launch an attack even when McCall was crying.
Best ever my foot
The topic at hand is "Lennox Lewis is the best Heavyweight ever"
I would say he in the top 3 with with Ali and and Louis.
Who is in your top 3?
And the point is, you can pick holes in everyones record.
To the guy who keeps droning on about Mercer like a broken record.
Ok it might have been a close fight. So what ??
You think that one fight (in which Lewis won by the way) somehow discredits Lewis ??
It really doesn't. We're looking at the bigger picture here.
Also there are a list of lesser fighters than gave Ali and Tyson in particular trouble. That's the nature of the division.
As for Tyson this supposedly great fighter spent most of the late 90's and early 00's getting knocked on his ass. Often by nobodies.
So please stop bringing up Ray Mercer like it somehow blows all other arguments out of the water. It really doesn't and it's getting really boring.
I've not mentioned 1 fight
I've said from 1993-1996 (a 4 year period), Lewis had a string of mediocre performances against average fighters.
D4, you have said he is in the top 3, I don't agree, but I respect your opinion.
My opinion is that because of these 4 mediocre years and his loss to Rahman, he is NOT the best ever. Why can't that opinion be respected? Or must we all say Lewis is the best ever.
My opinion is that because of these 4 mediocre years and his loss to Rahman, he is NOT the best ever. Why can't that opinion be respected? Or must we all say Lewis is the best ever.
-----------------------------
That opinion can be respected but I don't think you've given that opinion throughout this thread.
On the contrary you've been implying that the thought of Lewis as the best ever is a slightly far fetched notion.
In your own words you said the following about Lewis:
"In fact, you could argue that it's hard to even say he's a GREAT heavyweight, let alone the greatest ever".
I'm not saying that everyone has to say that Lewis is the best. But some people seem far too quick to dismiss the idea.
I'll happily admit that Lewis wasn't the best to watch a lot of the time and a few of his fights were a bit dull.
As a person Lewis himself isn't the most charismatic either by any means.
But the point of this thread was simply if all the Heavyweight Champions throughout history were able to fight each other at their peak which fighter would emerge with the most victories.
In my opinion Lewis would because he simply had too many attributes to his game. He was the full package and for me that makes him the best Heavyweight in history.
To quote myself fully:
========================================
In fact, you could argue that it's hard to even say he's a GREAT heavyweight, let alone the greatest ever.
But for the record, I do think he was great, but nowhere near the best ever.
=======================================
I stand by that.
However, I do take your point that he was underrated (especially during his career) and many people were quick to dismiss him, but I feel now that many people look at his record and have retrospectively overrated him.
We'll just have to agree to disagree here.
However, I do take your point that he was underrated (especially during his career) and many people were quick to dismiss him, but I feel now that many people look at his record and have retrospectively overrated him.
----------------------------
I actually think that many people have forgotten how good he really was.
YouTube is great for all the old Lewis fights and I would advise anyone in doubt to go and check them out.
He was a colossus of a Heavyweight even if he didn't have Ali's style or charisma and he didn't have the agression or ferocity of peak Tyson.
What Lewis did have though was the total package. He had a bit of everything to his game and was able to switch it and mix it up against any opponent. If you could build the perfect Heavyweight then Lewis would be as close to it as any fighter we've seen so far in my opinion.
Admitedly he did often lack the killer instinct and was sometimes too hesitant and cautious in certain fights but those are about the only negatives I could come up with for him.
I've read the 5-6 pages on this article and just can't believe some of the utter nonsense.
To say Tyson in his prime had not got elite footwork defense and jab is just wrong. So wrong actually I'll just leave it at that. Lewis was a great heavyweight top 10 imho but to say he was the best ever is just wrong too. Prime Tyson would have knocked Lewis clean out.
I watched Lewis struggle in fights against Bruno and yes He did loose the Mercer fight IMO. He got the decision but I had him loose by a couple of rounds.
Anyway the too best heavyweight boxers of all time and on a different level are Ali and Louis. Best boxer PFP all time IMO Ray Robinson. Special mention to Henry Armstrong.
Please ( and I respect all opinions ) don't say Lenox was the best heavyweight of all time because it's not true. Not even close my friend.
And I will add I was and still am a Lenox fan.
