Should Rooney be Benched??

He's your best player...

Since we moved Rooney upfront, the midfield has improved massively and we seem to be scoring a lot more from midfield than before. I think this shows why Rooney is in the top 2 or 3 players in the world right now.

Question is should he be sold as he is past his best.

Yes!

Before his acolytes attack me with stats, statistically Di Maria is our most influential midfielder

If Rooney is injured for the weekend then RVP can maybe get his chance as the lone striker.

We will then be able to see whether Rooney has helped us in the good run we have been on by being more disciplined up front or whether we have had results despite his performances.

I don't think that he has been brilliant over the last couple of months but he has given us a bit of movement up front.

Perhaps RVP on his own up there will offer more and it is a good chance to see against West Brom.

I'd be happy to start Falcao.

people can knock him all they want, but the servixe to the front player hasnt been great over the last few games.

his dissallowed goal was actually a very good finish.

By and large the service for the front players has been poor throughout the season.

It probably won't happen, being captain and all. But I would't be against someone else getting a go from the start

I'm still on the fence with Falcao mainly because the service for our strikers has been so,so poor this season. If the midfielders didnt get forward as much I'd be struggling to see where our goals would've come from this season.

I honestly cant think of many chances our strikers have had this season and its another thing LVG has to correct.

I've actually been questioning Rooney's ability for some time.

People have often said that even when poor he still gets the stats, since being moved up into the loan striker role he's scored 6 and assisted 1 in 11 games. By no means bad but still nothing to shout home about. Whoever is our lone striker we should expect far more.

This will be his 3rd season in a row where he's failed to score 20+ goals in an entire season.

While there is a debate to be had about Rooney as a starter I don't think the 3 seasons in a row thing can be held against him.

He missed a lot of 2012/2013 season with injury (remember that gash on the leg?), the season after he did okay - 19 goals in 40 games, and this season played a good 2 months as a midfielder. Had he played up front he would have gotten 20 goals. Still, he has 14 goals in 32 games as it is.

Rooney is a better option than the current RVP and Falcao. Whether or not he should be an automatic starter next season is down to who we have. If we sign someone like Lewandowski or Benzema then Rooney should be judged far more harshly but if we don't sign any strikers and just go with what we have we should persevere with him and hope the problem lies with the supply more than the focal point of the attack.

The sad truth is none of our strikers are good enough if we realistically want to challenge for the title and do well in Europe.

Big names who are all past their peak and it's been there for all to see for a while.

as much as i rate rooney, and his importance, form is form...
and he's not on it... did they see saturdays result and think, job done?
if so, i hope they get an absolute rollocking for it...
complacency has not business in Man Utd's house..

Roonster is not going to improve in the next season's.
How much left on his 250K a week contract ?
Looey has a huge rebuild to do.
Is he the right man ?

Not with the options we currently have no, but we could conceivably sign a replacement in the summer

Thing is we don't really know how well RVP would do in the loan striker role as he hasn't played there much if at all this season. It's the role he excelled in at Arsenal and won us the title, yet most of this season he's been asked to partner Falcao. It's at least worth giving him a go there even if he has been poor for us this season, and even then his goal to minutes ratio this season (1 every 200 min) is actually factionally better than Rooney's (1 every 220 min).

Rooney's injury (if it is) could actually be another case of an injury helping us out in terms of selection.

Possibly mu82. At Arsenal he had pace on the wing in the form of Walcott supplying him whereas with this formation (if the same people play) he'd have Fellaini, Mata and Young supplying him.

To be honest I haven't been that disappointed in RVP this season. He's actually been decent enough with the same amount of poor games that Rooney has had.

Maybe the experiment of playing 2 strikers together has skewed the real perceptions of the strikers talents.

If RVP is out for the next couple of weeks I have the feeling Falcao will start as he's more match fit but i'd like to see RVP get one final chance to cement a role in the side.

If anything the players RVP has thrived off most in terms of creators in recent years are Song, Cesc, Carrick and Scholes. The throughballs through the middle as opposed to pace on the wings, something we could potentially replicate with the ability of Mata and Herrera. But even then if we did want to utilise the wings we have players who can do that too. RVP is a #9 and that is exactly what we are operating with right now, makes total sense to play him there.

Also, one thing I've always wished we saw a bit more of, Mata operating in the #10 role behind RVP, think there could have been some lovely play there.

But I agree about Falcao potentially being more match fit, which is a shame as he isn't gonna be a United player after next month while RVP most likely will.
