Ok sure. No name villains, but I found it hard to be really invested. Plus nobody died.
You see the amount of cadets, and I was thinking, well, there’s gonna be a body count.
And it doesn’t happen, and everyone lives happily ever after.
Ok, it’s a feel good movie.
Just thought it was odd. And the whole rescue sequence just to have Goose’s son back with Maverick, while a nice touch, but really, that’s all that was in the end.
And then the Han Solo moment… you knew it was coming. Unlike in Star Wars.
So, it lost marks there for me.

But still can’t get over that move the Jet does.
Incredible. Was that CG or can they really do that?
It was unbelievable yet amazing

They had been training, they had all failed to make it so far. and it wasn’t until Maverick does it himself to show it can be done, and all of a sudden, we’re off to the races.

You’d think, someone would Fack up, in the real mission. Well I did. I was expecting it. Then I thought they’d send out the back up waiting on the ground.
I mean, if you’re gonna copy Star Wars Death Star Trench run, might as well go all the way, and have a crew that fail.
But nothing. So, they got me there.

I know the enemy would’ve been alerted, but surely the stakes become more heightened as a result.
But they went they way they did, it was fine, but, you know.

Stringer I've enjoyed your very valid criticisms of Obi Wan on the Star Wars thread but can't help you're nitpicking somewhat here mate

The trench run is a copy of A New Hope though, I'll give you that

Ok yeah the trench run I’ll give you, I did get a 'Luke you've switched off your targeting computer' vibe tbf

There's definitely elements of silliness in the movie but it's a Top Gun movie so I'm pretty sure that's to be expected.

But if you're looking for a movie that outdoes it's predecessor in every department (maybe not characters) with some incredible aviation action sequences then this is bang on in my humble opinion 👌

I agree with you on that totally Superb.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with it. And I felt overall it was basically the same film as the first one.
But the characters were better in the first one.

But the build up of the mission was great. And what it did do for me, was not have me get lost when it came to the real thing.
I knew exactly where everyone was, and what was happening, while it was going at break neck speed.
Props for that.
And there is a charm to the movie. Nobody jarred/annoyed me. Sure they were cardboard cut outs, but we’ve seen worse.
And if any of them bit the bullet I would’ve felt that.

But instead, I’m crying over a dude named Wade who had 57 seconds of screen time!

Oh yeh, no I’m not!

Yeah it's difficult to to top characters like Iceman and Goose etc. Although Miles Teller was good as new Goose. The guy playing new Iceman was a bit forgettable though as were the other pilots. They were meant to be though I think.

Really this movie was all about Cruise though, hence Maverick in the title. At least Tom Cruise doesn't try to hide that this is all about him lol.

Just one time, I would’ve loved to have seen Harrison Ford and Cruise in the same film.
He could’ve played the Ed Harris part.
Ed is a legend no doubt, but we’ve seen him do that role before.
Think Ford and Cruise together, in that scene, would’ve been special. Icons of the 80’s. Legends today.
Bit like Pacino and DeNiro in Heat on screen together.

Naah. That's not true mate. They were considered for the role, along with every other major male actor at the time but there's nothing to suggest they were the preferred ideal. In fact, reports suggested Dufresne turned down Cruise for the role.

He really has. Just think Goode just scene steals everytime.
Didn’t see it before, but Teller reminds me of Robert Mitchum in here, the way he looks.
Keep thinking they should remake, ‘Night of the Hunter’
with Teller.

At Castle Rock, Rob Reiner wanted to direct the movie and offered Darabont a huge sum for the script but Darabont said no and made it for less. The studio - particularly Reiner - wanted Cruise and Ford.

That is what was said on The Ringer Rewatchables podcast ^ on the movie.

"In fact, reports suggested Dufresne turned down Cruise for the role"

This literally has nothing to do with the claim that the studio wanted him.

You might as well have said, In fact, "I like rapsberry ice cream."

The Pennines would be a very pleasant place to watch it I'd imagine. All that nature. Could go on nice walks in between episodes.
