I'm the same, even Sky Sports calls us 'Spurs' now. It's becoming more and more common.

Tottenham have always been known as Spurs, even as a boy, 60 odd years ago, nobody said they were going to Tottenham, they always said they were going to see Spurs play. I am not sure why the modern supporters are that bothered, I`m not. Spurs is fine with me.

It's not the dropping of Tottenham, it's that it's not Hotspur. Which is after all pretty unique in English leagues?

Because it is shortening the name for ease of speak.
You may as well ask why Jonathan is shortened to Jon, David to Dave and Robert to Bob.
Hotspur is also a pretty ridiculous noun.

Hotspur means someone who is rash or does things carelessly without thought.

It is also the nickname of a traitor to our country.

Villa - 2 syllables

City - 2

United - 3

Hotspur - 2

Maybe we should call City "Tee" and United "Ted".

That would be ridiculous.

Most people call Manchester United a one syllable word anyway.

Always refer to myself as a 'Tottenham' fan not a 'Spurs' fan
