We did have a good big game record under LVG you just refuse to acknowledge It because you are the most biased poster on this forum.

Slating me doesn't make LVG any better at his job.

Last season he won just 3 (out of 8) games against the top 4

That included getting hammered at Arsenal and Spurs.

In his two biggest games in Europe we lost to Wolfsburg and Liverpool

So when people say his record in big games is something he should be applauded for I find it hard to see how we benefitted from it

Because it's a far better record than currently.

We've played a grand total of 4 big games and it's fair to say the 4 games we've played contained far better versions of Chelsea, Liverpool and city than LVG came up against

The games he's using when talking about LvG's 'big team' record is, as stated by himself, versus last season's top 4, i.e. the strongest teams in the league during that season. That, of course, excludes both Liverpool and Chelsea.

But when it comes to the sides you've played this year, he's saying that Chelsea and Liverpool are much stronger than last year.

The appropriate comparison ought to be to Leicester and Spurs last year.

They're both pragmatic managers, who have strong belief in their methods, and their teams are often not great to watch.

LVG was certainly better against the better teams.

It's all relative though. Theoretically, you have strengthened as much if not more than any of your rivals have done (or should have), the only thing that has changed is the coaches.

Just to add another dimension - this time to Robb's advantage.

Points per game for the top 4 this season and last:

Highest ppg average last season (38 games):

Leicester, 2.13 ppg

Lowest ppg average this season (13 games)

Arsenal, 2.15 ppg



Although this of course doesn't account for the fact that the top team's averages will generally be higher after 13 games than after 38.

Indeed but on the other hand that is evened out because LVG was in his second season and must have known his players more than Jose does in his first season.

How can people compare Mourinho and van gaal when man Utd, man city, Chelsea and Liverpool all have completely different teams than last year?

Hmm, a tough question because we haven't played Spurs yet and IMO they're on par at worst/best with last seasons Spurs. Leicester of course have regressed but the very definition of what teams are our big games changed this season.

Liverpool will always be a big game but I don't count last seasons Liverpool as one which should count in the big game record because they were 8th and winning or losing to them wasn't really important in the scheme of the top four race anymore than beating West Brom was. Same with Chelsea


For me the big games this season are..

City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs

Last season it should be

meltonblue do you agree Robb is a LVG hater The way he makes LVG sound like as if he was terrible at everything. Its not like we had the joint best defensive record last season and 2nd best home record but he will troll LVG for Man Utd home record. He will troll LVG big games and then say the competition is stronger this season. Is it really stronger?

Whats funny is that Mourinho has made the most expensive squad make LVG look like a genius:
Manchester United after 13 league games... Manager
2016-17: 20 points, sixth place Jose Mourinho
2015-16: 27 points, second place Louis van Gaal
2014-15: 22 points, fourth place Louis van Gaal
2013-14: 22 points, eighth place David Moyes

Again, I've never ever said LVG had a terrible big game record

But I'm saying that when it mattered it let him down last season. Our biggest 'big game' last season was away to Spurs because going into that game we were 4 points behind City with a game in hand.

A manager with a great big game record would have found a way to win. We instead were trounced 3-0

It's no good bringing out the 'big game' card when you can't win the big ones when they matter

Robb so LVG record was played 8 won 3 drawn 3 defeats 2 giving him 12 points out of 24.

Mourinho record so far was played 4 won 0 drawn 2 defeats 2 so 2 points out of 12. He has an extra 2 games total and in last 6 games he needs 10 points to match LVG points total in 2 more games

The premier league was an absolute shambles last year. All the big teams wre shiiit and it was furrrking Lester and totts fighting for the title. This year Chelsea man city and Liverpool are exponentially stronger, it's crazy to say van gaal beat last years Liverpool and Mourinho didn't so van gaal is better. It's crazy to say last year van gaal was second because the league was shiiit last year.

The league is totally different this year. I've never seen such an increase in competition and quality from one year to another.

I don't think the quality is different. Every side we have battered at home but drawn. I think the league is weaker as the smaller teams just rely on keeper and 11 defenders. Last season they could actually withstand attacks better but this season not.

The league is weaker, West Ham United play like a relegation side. Arsenal played like an amateur team against us. Stoke City probably gave their worst performance at OT but got their first point at OT

The league is totally different this year
