It wasn't that we lost, it was the manner of it.
You are right, sport is ephemeral and this result will soon be forgotten. Except for the lad going to his first game, the bloke who got up early to drive to London, paid £50 for his ticket, and just got home.
All games count for fans.
--------------------------
Although I do agree with Robb that the result today doesn't really matter to the team. Even if we had won today I think we'd have struggled for top 4. Jose did the right thing in resting some of the players for Thursday.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It wasn't the lineup that was the problem but the pathetic tactics.
Arsenal looked nervy when we attacked them. Problem is we didn't do much of that.
And this is the problem with Mourinho in these games. Only a positive result can justify these shiiiiity negative performances.
If we actually play with a bit of adventure and lose it's less of an issue. And the fact this game was apparently of no importance, it makes the decision to play such a way even more gauling - or in reality, the game did actially have more importance than Mourinho and his fan's spin would suggest.
I'm sorry but Arsenal were playing with a shiiit back 3. Their striker is our reject. Our youngster had their best player in his pocket all game. Arsenal are toothless, yet gave us a hiding today. That team we had out there today is not miles away from that Arsenal 11. The tactics killed us, simple.
I'm sure Jose didn't want to lose.
I'm sure he set up with the purpose of getting a goal on the break and on a couple of moments we nearly did.
But those tactics are risky because they need us to not only defend really well but we have to take our rare chances.
Like you said earlier, if we had better counter attacking players that tactic would work better. I'm sure next season we'll have better players to make these away games work for us

So why not use tactics that are better suited to the players that you have? Surely that is what a top manager should do?
I am not really sure that I agree that we don't have good counter attacking players anyway.
I'm surprised Mourinho wasn't more adventurous given the priority is now the Europa and I would have thought trying out some more attacking ideas would have been more beneficial from an effectively dead rubber.
I imagine it was partly down to wanting to keep the unbeaten run going though and personally not wanting to lose to an old adversary. He can be more interested in not losing a bit too much at times.

You're trying to defend something that isn't worth the effort. It was a poor performance, and a let down, and because we weren't going to get top 4 anyway shouldn't affect the performance.
Roll on Thursday and let's hope for a good win.
Robb these fans aren't going to watch man utd put out the reserves against a league two relegation battling team
They went to watch, what was once the biggest fixture in the PL, against a team we are battling against for top 4
We might as well write off the spurs game too and tell fans not to turn up with this attitude

----------------------------------------------------------------------
You may wanna see that game again
From the first minute we were battered by Arsenal and it was a far worse performance than today. At least today we had the excuse that we weren't really too fussed by the result.
Last season they were clearly the better side from minute 1-90
You can argue and debate over team selection and changes made etc but with the lineup we had there's no reason we should have been so negative.
If we really aren't bothered about the top 4 why not just go there today and have a go commit bodies if we get countered and lose by 3 what have we lost out on? Still ended up losing by 2 today. Just disappointing to go up against a weak arsenal side and not even have a go at attacking their defence.
But that's his problem, he shouldn't have relied on the counter so much when it's an area we've been lacking in. He should have used tactics to suit.
Arsenal are dangerous in attack, but they aren't Barcelona, and they wobble when you attack them.
Such negative tactics weren't necessary. But this is Mourinho so it is what it is. Gonna have to put up with shiiiit like this as long as he's here.

I'm sure next season we'll have better players to make these away games work for us
------------------------------
So why not use tactics that are better suited to the players that you have? Surely that is what a top manager should do?
I am not really sure that I agree that we don't have good counter attacking players anyway.

I'm surprised Mourinho wasn't more adventurous given the priority is now the Europa and I would have thought trying out some more attacking ideas would have been more beneficial from an effectively dead rubber.
I imagine it was partly down to wanting to keep the unbeaten run going though and personally not wanting to lose to an old adversary. He can be more interested in not losing a bit too much at times.

Did we spend £200 million?
And Europa isn't a saviour. It's a trophy we've chosen to compete in with 100% seriousness about winning since around October time
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I dont know the exact number but we spent alot
Europa was (or should have been) a backup plan in the worst case scenario
and thats where we are now
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If winning the Europa is the worst case scenario then I would love to see best case

And the bloke who paid his £50 may have got his ticket and planned his day before he knew what Jose said.

That fan going today will have expected a game where we weren't really caring too much about the game
-----------------
And there in lies the problem!
Fans who pay to go to the game tickets, travel, other expenses, Sorting work and family round fixtures!
Every game matters and so does every result.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No, every game does not matter nor does every result.
--------------------------
It does to those paying the money and making the effort to go to games..
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Every single person who went to this game knew it was a game we'd rest players and wouldn't go as hard as we usually would. If the paid £50 and walked away shocked then they are pretty naive
------------------------------
Pretty naive to think that the manager might want to win against one of his biggest rivals and keep alive the hope of top 4? I don't think so. Jose made it clear a few days back that he might rest players for today's game, but I expect that the fans would have already bought their tickets by then.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Those fans will be the first to celebrate if we look fresher in the final and beat Ajax (if we make it that far)
With Jose it's never straightforward but it often pays off for the long suffering fans
-----------------------
As I have already said, I don't mind that he rested some players. It was probably the right move. But our style of play today was (again) pretty terrible.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
They didn't give us a hiding today. Far from it. One deflected goal and one goal where fair play, Welbck did well.
Last season was a hiding.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Last season was very similar to this, we had chances that game as well. Tactics again killed us that game. With a team worse than today, we gave them a good beating at Old Trafford. You know why? We had a go

If we're like this in season 2/3 plus I'd be annoyed but as it's his first season and I can see what hes planning long term I'm an forgive him this.

The best we were expecting was a title challenge. We hired johhny big balls as manager with previous titles in the PL, broke the world record and signed Ibra.
